THE WELLINGTON MEETING,
•PERFORMANCES OF AMERICAN TEAM. : ' [Per Press Association 1 WELLINGTON, February, 28. Brilliant weather, prevailed this afternoon for the final appearance of the American athletes at the meeting 1 -on the Basin Reserve arranged by the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association., The , attendance was about 2500. The public’were treated to a most interesting exhibition by, the -visitors. The fields on’thfe whole were only medium in size, but competition in' every event was keen. The array of local ability against the visitors was not particularly,strong; and .the absence of Cashman, ! Keddell, f Dormer- and Hill; fromStho meeting was keenly felt. Of the New Zealand men Halligan- put up the best performance.' The visitors showed themselves r in much "better form than on "' their previous Wellington ■ visit Templeton was in magnificent jumping form. Parker ran well -but., was too heavily''handicapped to win. Caughey ,was ae prominent' as ever in the “ strong man ” events.. The following are details of; the racing; Mile Flat—J. -Power (America), Scr, 1; L. J. SJiaw,. 6oyds, 2; R.’ Hastings, 100yds, 8. Also started—D. Binnie 85yds, j. T. : Byma 35yds,-S. Hall 85yds, Hr Williams -EOyde, G. H. Tressider 55yds, J. R. Perston 70yds, G. H. Seddon 76yds, F. Alexander 90yds, C. Cates 90yds, G. .Haughton 110yds, !W. Skindley 110yds, J. Stevens 140yds and J. W. Heenan 145yds. Power was never troubled throughout the race! He ran with a beautiful stride, overhauling man after man. Binnio ran a splendid race up to the last lap and. was the only man besides. Power who showed brilliancy. Half-way round the last lap Power caught him. however,: and Binnie was done. Power then went right out and finished fifteen • yards ahead of Shaw. Tho American received an oration for.his splendid race. Time—4min 283-ssec. 100yds Handicap—First heat: G. Parker (America), scr, 1; M. Pool, 4yds, and J. Wilton,- 6yds, dead heat, 2. H. J.' Martis (Wanganui) scr and F. C. Hubbard 6yds also started. Parker won by two yards very comfortably. Time—lol-sscc. Second heat: L. Murphy, 10yds, 1; G. G. Halo, Byds, 2. Won by two feet. Also started—R. J. Adams 9yds and R. C. Avery 10yds. Time — 10 l-ssec. Third heat: R. Mr Morris (Hutt), 11yds, 1; A. Cunningham, Byds, 2. R. Laughnan 10yds also started. Morris, tile “ dark hor?e ” from the Hutt, proved a surprise and" won. by two yards with the greatest case. Time—lOsec. Fourth heat: V. J. Gallic, 11yds, 1; J. C. Robinson, 12yds, 2. Also started—H. Foster 12yds, H. Hart 12yds and J. Atkinson 12yds. Final— R. M. Morris (Hutt), Ilyas, 1; 'J. C. Robinson, 12yds, 2; G. Hale, Byds, 3. All qualified started, including Parker (America). The visitor, however, had no hope against tho handicapping. The winner is a most promising runner and handsomely built. He has a free Btyle, and should be nil the better when he is more developed. Time —10 l-ssec. Two-mile Walk—G. Turner,' scr., 1; A. B. Sievwright, 160yds, 2. Also started, M. Tracy, 400yds. Turner'only just won by five yards. Both placed men just fell on the' tape. Time—llmin 20sec. 120yds Hurdles (New Zealand amateur record. 15 3-10 sec. G. P. Keddell) —First heat: A. Halligau, 4yds and one hurdle down, 1; R: K. Templeton (America), scr, 2. Also started —P. E. Boyle, 3yds and one hurdle down. Halligan had Templeton right up to the last and beat him by nearly a yard. The American brushed the last, hurdle and that spoiled the usual dive for the tape which has won him events in the past. Time—l 6 2-ssec. Second heat: R. V. Kay, 12yds and two hurdles, 1; ,H. H, Hart, 12yds and two hurdles, 2. E. G. Sutherland, 10yds and one hurdle, also started. Won easily. Time—l 7 l-ssec. Final heat: Templeton (America), scr, 1; A. Halligan, 4yds and one hurdle down, 2; R. V. Kay. 12yds and two hurdles down. 3. A njest interesting race, Temnlotou simply flew away, at the start and "caught Halligan at 1 the fourth hurdle. Halligan then went at him, but Templeton kept just sliehtly ahead. The two cleared the last hurd e almost together, but Templeton dived a few inches ’ ahead. Time—16sec.
Broad Jump (handicap)—G. Heley, 2ft. 20ft 9in, 1; W. Tt. Templeton, scr, 20ft Tin, 2. Also ccmoetccl—F. C. Hubbard scr. R. M’Kay lit Sin, W. J. Bennett Ift 9in, E. G. Sutherland 2ft. ftOyds Invitation Race—J. Wilton (Wellington), 1; H. T. Me.rtis (AVanganui), 2. Also started—A. L. Trersider (Masterton). Wilton had no difficulty in getting to. the tape first by two yards.. Time—s2 2-sscc. 220vds Handicap—First heat: V. J. Gallie, 18vds', 1; G. Heley, 12yds, 2. Won by a yard. Time—22 '2-ssee. Second heat: J. C. Robinson, 20yds, 1; G. Parlter (America), scr, 2. The American found the handicunping too big for .him. Time —22 2-ssec. Third heat: F. C. Hubbard, 9yds, 1; W. J. Bennett, 12yds, 2. Time 22 3-secc. Final heat : J. C. Robinson, 20yds, 1; V, J. Gallie, 18yds,'2; G. Parker (America), scr, 3. Parkor came through the field in great stylo but he had net a hope of catching the limit men. His finishing third was a. remcrkablo per-formAnce. Time —22 l-ssec. Half-mile Handicap—J. D. Nash, GOyds, 1; G. Bilderbeek, 66yds, 2; R. Eenkin, 60yds, 3. Also competed—S. Hall (10yds), U. Binnie (10yds), H. Williams (20yds),- G. H. Tressider (20vds), Tj. G. Shaw (35ycls), J. Rigg (40yds),'W. Davison (40yds;, A. Robbie (40yds), C. Cates (45ydF). G. Haughton (,50yds). This, was an exciting finish, Nash just getting homo-by eighteen inches. He ran a splendid race. Time— 2min 0 2-ssec. Mile Walk—A. B. Sievwright, &ovds, 1; P. J. Fitsgerald, 100yds. 2; F. Robinson, 220yds, 3. An interesting race. ,• W.n comfortably. Time—(imin olsec. Pole Vault—]?". R. Templeton 'America), scr, llft'lin, 1; A. Harvey, Pin. 10ft 6in, 2. Templeton’s jump was a magnificent effort. He cleared the bar '.with* fuUy three inches to spare. He then attempted the' Australasian record (lift Sin), but just shaved the bar on\two out of three trie?. He. received an ovation from the crowd. Three .Mile Handicap—A. Hudson, acr, 1; 11. Williams, 120yds. 2. Also cmnpoted—J. R. Prreton ISOvds, R. Hastings 290yds. W. Skinlev 300yds. A. C. Clapha-m 400yds. Hudson is a new discovery. His win over Bdatsoh recently caused a great deal of intercut in the race, and his running was wetqhed closely He has a perfect style, 1 and never !c£ up once during the long ra"e, | and finished with a splendid sprint fifty yards ahead of Williams. The time for ths race was good, lCrniu 13 3-ssrc, considerably better than that in which the Australasian championship was won a, few weeks ago.
