SWIMMING.

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Council of the New Zealand Swimming Association met last night; present- I —Mr G. Harris, president (chairman), and Messrs G. Rich (South Canterbury), J. Buchanan (Nelson), H. M’D. Vincent (Hawke’s Bay), F. Stokes (Canterbury), H. J. Williams (Auckland), C. C. Bryant (Wanganui), F. C. Fantham (Westland), and P. M. Rundle (Otago), honorary secretary. Before the business - started the president said that on behalf of himself and his wife, he desired to thank the Council for tho very handsome present it had sent to them on the occasion ot their silver wedding. As an expression of the hearty goodwill of the swimmers in New Zealand they valued it very highly, and he hoped that it would always be kept in the family as a reminder of his happy connection with the Council.

The Nelson Centre wrote stating that Mr J. R. Buchanan had been elected the Centre’s delegate on the Council.

Pursuant to notice of motion, Air F. Stokes moved that teams of six swimmers, together with an instructor, should receive travelling expenses when giving demonstrations in lifesaving, provided that no member of the team or the instructor competed for a prize when travelling under such conditions. A list of the members of the teams and the instructor must be sent to the local head Centre of the Royal Life Saving Society at least seven days before the event, and be approved by the head Centre. Mr G. Rich seconded the motion, which, after discussion, was carried. On the motion of Air H. J. Williams, it was decided that as the Waitemata Club had to forego its visit from an Australian team last season, the Council would favourably consider any application for permission to bring over another team this or next season, should the Club apply through the Auckland Centre.

The Auckland Centre reported that, with the. Council’s permission, it had arranged for tho visit of an Australian team, consisting of Aliss F. Durack, and Messrs T. Longworth, H. Hardwick. F. Thomas and T. Smith.

Reporting on the recent carnival at Blenheim, Mr G. Rich said that the control of the meeting was in every way satisfactory. Public patronage had been very good, and altogether the championship meeting was a great success. He laid on the table tho applications for records and standard certificates, and other documents. The time, 61 l-ssec, registered by M. E. Champion, of Auckland, in tho 100yds championship, was passed as a record. . All applications for standard certificates were passed, the supporting documents being found in order. The record of C. Atkinson (East Christchurch), of 3min 7sec for the 220yds breast-stroke championship was also passed. It was decided to write to the Nelson Centre and to Air Stone,- - the honorary secretary of the meeting, congratulating them on the success of the championships, and to pass a vote of thanks to the Council’s representative, Air G. Rich. M. Conord, of the Societies Francaises de Sports Athletiques, wrote asking for information regarding the sport of swimming in New Zealand, and the secretary reported that the request had been complied with. Tho Westland Centre applied for the championship meeting in 1918. Tho matter 'was held over till the annual meeting. Mr G. Rich reported that at Blenheim he made inquiries regarding the report that two Auckland swimmers had tried to get certain conditions at Napier which would make them professionals. He had warned the manager of the Auckland team that if the men or the club had received any sharo of the gate the whole team would be liable to suspension. One of the men, Mulverbill, denied receiving any share of the gate at Napier, but said that they might get some. From wliat he could gather tho Auckland men got a share of the gate at Taihape. He would suggest that the Taihapa Club and • the Wellington, Hawke’s Bay and Wanganui Centres should be written to for all information regarding the matter. A subcommittee was set up to deal with the matter, and it was decided ’to inform the Waitemata Club of its action. • A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Parsonson, a retiring member of the Council, for his valuable services to the sport. Air AI’D. Vincent gave notice of motion to alter rules giving entrance fees for championships to the Centre and not to tho Council, and also to alter the 220yds breast-stroke championship to 200yds, as the latter distance was recognised by tho governing authorities.
