There wero only about a dozen persoas present at tho time, advertised for, the sale, which was conducted by Mr R. Leckie, chief clerk, of the Department. The conditions of sale made it necessary for the successful bidders to deposit one half-years rent on tho fall of tho hammer, and the purchasers had no right to the timber or flax on the land. Tho value of improvements on the two runs in the Ashburton County had to bo paid before tho licensees obtained possession, which would be given, under ordinary circumstances, on March 1. __ For Run No. 106, Ashburton County, 7200 acres, tho upset rental was £575, and it was passed in, there being no bids. The upset for Run 107, 7109 acres, was £SOO, and no bid was forthcoming. . For the Mackenzie run, 11,160 acres, tho bidding started at tho upset, £lB6, and ran up to £336 before it was knocked down to Vyvian Lloyd Lo Cren.
