BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION.
MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE
A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Christchurch Beautifying Association was held on Tuesday; present—Messrs A. Kaye (chairman), A. D. Dobson, J. Jamieson, R. Hill Fisher, S. Hurst Seager, E. Smith and H. G. Ell, M.P., and Dr Chilton. Mr Jamieson reported that the live fence on the Lincoln Road had been removed for eleven chains, and an open fence erected in its place. He suggested that the Association should make a further grant towards extending' the present work beyond Selwyn Street. Before deciding the members agreed to visit the spot and examine the" work that had already been done.
The honorary curator, Mr H. G. Ell reported that the dry weather was having an injurious effect .upon the trees and shrubs planted on the river bank near* the Carlton Bridge. The trees on Moorhouse Avenue had been verv little damaged, the staking was well done, only two or three of the trees breaking’away. During the next planting season about twenty trees would be needed to replace those which had either died or had been badly damaged. The planting of Selwvn Street, with an avenue of silver birches, would be gone on with' during the next planting season. This also applied to the triangle, at the junctions of South CreScent Road' and Strickland Street. Mr Ell suggested that an effort should bo made to open up the whole of the South Bark, by placing the wire fence inside the second row of trees. He suggested further that an effort should be made to plant the _ south side of the railway line from Lincoln Road to Colombo Street with cabbage trees, and the North Island kowhai. These trees would not obstruct the view, and would in a few years, improve the appearanco of this aproach to Christchurch by the Southern Railway. It was decided to hold the annual meeting of the Association in the Chamber of Commerce, on Thursday, March 19, and as the public will be invited to attend, it is proposed to have some interesting subject for discussion.
The members then adjourned to the South Park, and it was decided .to leave the matter of the proposed grant over until the next meeting.
