DIAMOND HARBOUR.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,; —Through the medium of youf paper, I would like-to. draw attention to a matter which, concerns ihe Lyttelton residents; .As you. know; the Lyttelton Borough Council (have acquired the Diamond Harbour estate tor a trans-harbour settlement. Fcr the convenience of visitors vhe Borough Council have seen fit to change the old homestead into a. hostel. When one lands on the, wharf one is confronted with notices such as these:—“Afternoon tea 6d,” “Ltincheon from Is 6d,” and not- only at the wharf are these; notices; but -also; on the trees directing* the hungry to--a place .where refreshments- may- be obtained. . r ", : -v(. {
(Last Saturday two gentlemen, .after having a fairlv.wet passage across the harbour, made their way (up to the hostel, where they anticipated having afternoon tea. On arriving there they were met with a woman, wearing a blue ribbon, who informed them that the Lyttelton Municipal Hostel at Diamond Harbour is a private concern for ten days, and during that time the Y.W.C.A. will see to the wellbeing of Diamond Harbour. I do not - know whether Mr Walker is away on holiday or not, but 1 would like to know why these people, most of whom have no connection with Lyttelton at all, should be .given sole charge of the‘concern for which we are paying.—l am, etc., _ . INDIG (N ANT.
