LIFE SAVING SOCIETY.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE.

The annual conference of the Roval Life Saving Society was held on Friday in the Institute Building, Blenheim, The following delegates were present:—Mr H. W. Cooper (Wanganui), in the chair,, and Messrs Hill, Neal and Somerfield (Wellington), W. Cookson (Otago), and F. Collins and A. G. Munns (Canterbury). Mr A. G. Munns was elected secretary to the conference.

The . Canterbury delegates put the following remits before the conference, and they were carried: , (1) Surf Medallion.—This Centre believes the time to be opportune for the Royal Life Saving Society to take r-teps towards issuing the surf medallion 10 members of affiliated surf-bathing clubs who shall pass the - required tests in the surf, on the same lines as that issued by the Surf Bathing Association of New South Wales.

(2) Affiliation fees paid to London Centre.—-At present head centres in the dominion pay two affiliation fees, one guinea to the London executive and three to the Dominion Executive Council for working expenses and so on. This centre is of opinion that the Dominion Executive should forward an affiliation fee of one guinea which would cover the whole of the centres in the dominion. (3) Annual Examination of Holders of Bronze Medallions.—The question has arisen whether it would he possible io make holders of this award undergo an annual examination in irder to ensure that they are kept proficient in tho methods taught by the Royal life Saving Society, a small silk badge with the date of examination being given, for which a small charge to cover cost of same could be made. The following remits were put by Wellington, and were also carried: (1) That stock books be printed so that uniform stock accounts might be kept, and that the prices of stock be pu Wished for the information of centres.

(2) That 100 yards back stroke event be placed on the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association championship calendar.

(3) That it be suggested to the Dominion 1 Executive Council to get into communication with the director of physical instruction in order to point out that on pages 64 to 74 of the handbook is given a system of Infnd drills for the breast strokes.

In connection with the last-named remit the secretary reported that he had supplied the director with twelve handbooks and illustrated charts.

Mr Hill moved as a suggestion to the Council, that a competition for ladies should bo arranged for on the same lines as the Wigram Shield.
