When daylight broke |‘it -was decided to attempt communication "with the shore, and Earle volunteered to endeavour to swim with a line. After eeVcrnl arduous attempts he was rescued by those on board the vessel. A boat then left- the steamer for the shore, and in at- • >emptine to land, capsized.. Mr Adcock, wh»

was in charge, reached the beach, and, although suffering from exhaustion, at once re-entered the water, and was successful in his rescue work.) SHIPPING NOTES. The ATapawa is due at Lyttelton about Monday next, with a consignment of sheep from Gisborne. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Hororeta, which is intended for the London-New Zealand trade, will have storage accommodation for 135,000 carcoses of frozen meat. According to an Admiralty list issued* early in January, thirteen merchant steamers had been armed, each with two quick-firing guns, mounted in the stern. According to & London shipping paper, the owners of the Allan Line of steamers, Pacifio Navigation Company and tho Aeiatic Steam Navigation Company have decided to make immediate increases in the salaries of thoir officers. Tho Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Mata* tua is due at Wellington on Monday next from Auckland, in continuation of her voyage from Liverpool. Lyttelton should be reached about Thursday next, and Dunedin somo days later. Subsequently the Matatua will load at Timaru, Gisborno, Napier. Picton and Wellington. Wireless advico received by the New Zealand Shipping Company states that the Suffolk, en route from London to Auckland and ports, will reach New Zealand on Monday next. Nelson will be her final port of discharge, and afterwards the vessel will take uti tho Homeward loading berth. The barque Wild Wave has been chartered to load timber at Port Esperance (Tasmania) for Lvftelton. Taking advantage of the favourable wind yesterday morning, the harquentine Wanganui left port for Wanganui, where she will load timber for Sydney. Regarding the alleged shortage of ships officers, tho Imperial Merchant Service Guild reports a glut of competent masters and officers who are seeking suitable emplovmont, the number of names on the books at headquarters for this purpose approaching one hundred.. The South Wales agent of the Guild reports that the number of inquiries for officers has dropped considerably, that many members are now registering their names 'for emplovment, and that the agency will be busy with this work for some considerable time. The London of the Guild reports a decided falling off in the number of berths offering, that the number • of. members looking for berths has increased verv considerably, and that ho will bo bard put to it for some weeks to come to obtain suitable berths for officors. . Up to a late hour last night there no sign of the Kaituna from Westport, Tavmni and Himitangi from Chatham Islands. The protracted passages are probably due to the southerly galo. The New Zealand Shipping Company has been advised that tho Rotorua arrived at Monte Video from Wellington on February 25.
