SWIMMING.
TINWALD CLUB. CARNIVAL. The Tinwald Amateur * Swimming Club held its annual carnival yesterday i after- ■ noon in fine weather. There was a large j attendance of spectators. A large number j of competitors and officials journeyed from 1 Christchmoh. The racing was first-class, and all events were keenly contested. The chief attraction was the 220 Yards Provincial Championship. C. Atkinson, who is , in splendid form, soon showed the way, and proved an easy winner by about- fifteen yards. L. Hill made a great race for second place, and beat Annand by a yard. The carnival was one of the best held this season, and the programme was the lengthiest put on by any club for some years. The management was good, and all events were got off smartly. During the afternoon Misses Ead-e and Piper gave an exhibition of life-savin", which was much appreciated. Atkinson soon went to the lead and at 100 yards led by threo yards from Annand, with Jerred third and Hill fourth. Atkinson- swimming strongly . increased his lead and at 150 yards he led Annand by five yards, Hill being a bad fourth. Hill put in a great sprint and. drew level with Annand. At the 200 yards turn Atkinson also sprinted and won comfortably bv fifteen yards from Hill, with Annand a yard behind. Hill swam a great race and was loud v applauded on his _ fine performance in gating second place. Cross won the prize for the highest aggregate points as an unplaced competitor in the diving. After the carnival Mr J. < Cow, president of the Tinwald Club, presented the Hugo Friedlander, Cup to the Opawa No. 1 team, ■ SOUTHBRIDGE CLUB. The committee of the Southbridge Swimming Club met on Monday evening, Mr J. C. Free presiding over a fair attendance. Correspondence was read from the Leeston, Dunsandel and Lincoln College Clubs with regard to the cup offered for competition by the Hon R. H. Rhodes. The chairman said he had interviewed Mr Rhodes on the matter, pointing out that amateurs and professionals could not Compete together. It had been ’ decided to allow the matter to stand over until a meeting of delegates from the different clubs,; was held. The secretary was instructed i to write to the secretary of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur ■ Swimming Association to ascertain the Southbridge Club’s position with respect to the tropny. It was decided to hold a sports moating on March 11, and a draft programmo submitted by a sub-committee was adopted. Officials to control the sports were appointed as follow:—Judges—Rev H. G. Hawkins, -Messrs M. Curran, E. G. Hubbard and J. Mi. A. Walker; starter, Mr C. H. Piper; check starter, Mr C. F. Roi; timekeeper, Mr J. W. A. Walker; • liandicapper, Mr C. D. Thompson. It was decided to ask the kdies to provide afternoon tea on sports day and the school committee to grant the children a holiday for the occasion. The secretary reported having received several promises of trophies and the donors wero thanked.
