Major Pinwill left for Wellington last night. Bishop Julius arrived from the north yesterday. Mr Joshua Little was a passenger for Wellington last night. Mr G. Fenwick arrived from Wellington yesterday morning. Mr and Mrs F. E. Hyman returned from the north yesterday. Mr and Mrs Le Roche, arrived from Auckland yesterday. Mr R. B. Bell, of Ashburton, arrived in Christchurch last evening. Mr P. C. Neill left for Dunedin by the first express yesterday. Dr J. W. Barritt, of Melbourne, arrived in the city yesterday morning. Mr A. W: Chamberlain left for Dunedin by the second express yesterday. General Godley and Mrs Godley were passengers for Wellington last night. Mr J. C. N. Grigg, of Longbeach,. left for Wellington by the ferry/ steamer last night. The Rev C. H. Olds has received notice that he has passed the final section of the B.A. degree examination. • Mr C. S. Thomas, well-known in athletic circles, left Christchurch last night on his way to the Old Country. Mr W. F. Hilson, secretary of the M'Lean Institute, will leave on Friday for a fortnight's holiday in the Oamaru district. Mr and Mrs W. M'Kenzie Purkis, accompanied by Miss Gwen Lomas, of Christchurch. will leave for Sydney, via Wellington, by the Manuka this evening. The condition of Professor Scott, Dean, of the Medical Faculty at the Otago University, is oausing grave an T xiety, says a Press Association message. Mr C. S. Thomas, Mrs D. Thomas and Miss Thomas, of Ashburton, have started on a,trip to the Old Country. They left Christchurch for Wellington last evening, and will be away about nine months. Mr Harry Muller, formerly of Palmerston North, and well known in Christchurch,. has been appointed to succeed Mr William Douglas" as general manager for the Brennan-Fuller Vaudeville Proprietary, in New Zealand. . Mr M. Burnett has resigned his seat on the executive of the Wellington Centre of the Amateur Athletic Association, in consequence of his olectioh to the New Zealand Council as a representative of Canterbury Centre. , The Hon R, H. Rhodes, PostmasterGeneral, was in Christchurch yesterday, attending to departmental affairs. In the morning he attended at tho Provincial Council Chambers, and was waited upon by a number of persons who had business with him. <Mr and Mrs Montgomery-Spencer and Mr J. C. Bnrdon, of Geraldine, are making a tour of the Hot Lakes. They intend to spend some time fishing in the Rangateiki and tho Galatea and will.also visit Lake Waikaremoana. . Mr James Ashley, who is at present a member of the New Brighton Borough Council, has been waited upon by several New Brighton residents, ana, in response to their request, he has consented to be a candidate for the New Brighton mayoralty. A telegram from the Dunedin correspondent of the "Lyttelton Times" announces the death of Mr Henry Skey, aged seventy-seven- years, formerly of/the Survey Department. The deceased, who lived at Leith Valloy, was the Dunedin meteorologist in the seventies. MrW.C. Tisch, of Christchurch, is expected to return to this city from England early in March. Mr Tisch has been in England for some three years during which tiiMe he has been studying electric traction work in theory and practice, first at King's College and then with the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. Mr A. L. Sutton has consented to take up the. position of conductor ro the Christchurch Musical Society and the Christchurch Orchestral Society until the organisations find someone to take up the work,pending the return of Mr A. W. Bunz. Mr Sutton has had experience as director of .orchestras in Australia, and he was conductor of the Federal Band. The • executive of _ the New. Zealand Public Service Association is supporting the candidature of Messrs George Allport, Secretary of Marine, H. W. Bishop, Stipendiary Magistrate at Christchurch, and J. W. Macdonald, Solicitor to , the Public Trust Office, Wellington, as candidates for election to the Public Service Superannuation Board. Mr Macdonald is president of the Association, and chairman of the Wellington section.
At a meeting of the Education Board yesterday the following appointments to the boards of managers of associated classes were made: Ashburton, Messrs J. Tucker and W. H. Collins; Banks Peninsula (Akaroa), Mr J. D. Bru«b. Christchurch. Messrs C. H. Opie, C. D. Hardie and E. H. Andrews; Kaiapoi, Messrs J. H. Blackwell and T. Douds. , The same gentlemen held office as representatives of the Education Board last year. As Earl Grey is president of the Royal Colonial Institute, and in that capacity has_ recently infused fresh life and vigour into the organisation, the Canterbury members of the Institute were anxious to entertain him at a dinner during his stay in Christchurch: Information has been received, however, that owing to the state of his health, Earl Grey is obliged to decline, all invitations of the kind, with the exception of one public luncheon which will be held in his honour in Wellington. The Mayor and Mrs Holland will leave for Dunedin bv the first express to-day to attend the Methodist Conference in that city. Mr Holland has also, accented an invitation from the Dunedin City Council to inspect the Waipori electrical light and power, scheme. They will return to Christchurch on March 7. During Mr Holland's absence, the DeputyMayor, Mr H. B. Sorensen, will be in attendance at' the City Council Chambers from 12.30 to 1 p.m.
