CORRECTION

THE United Press Association has forwarded the following statement for publication;—

"In a cablegram from Washington received through the Press Association which appeared in the 'Lyttelton Times of February 2 dealing with the question ot Asiatio exclusion a statement was included that Meßßi-s Bums, Philp and Co. wore offering cheap fares to Japan. To this statement in the context in which it appeared Messrs Bums, Philp and Co. have taken the strongest exception. V\o need hardl> say that we had not, and we aro requosted by the Press Association to make the samo statement on its_ behalf, the slightost intention of reflecting in any way whatsoever upon Messrs Bums, Philp and Co. This message was published just as it reached us but we find upon inquiry that tho words to which exception is taken did not form part of the original message, but became interpolated in.someway between the time of the receipt of the message in Sydney by the Eastern Extension Cable Company and the time of its being handed out by that company at Wakapuaka. While therefore neither the Press Association nor this paper is really to blamo we can quite appreciate the annoyance that Messrs Burns, Philp and Co. feel at the publication of the words complained of and we desire to express our sincere regret that the words should have found their way into our columns. This statement is not made only on our own account but also on beha.f of the Press Association, which desires to express to Messrs Bums, Philp and Co. its reoret that it should have been the medium though entirely innocently- of transmitting the words complained of."'
