ROAD TRAFFIC AND LICENSE FEES. [From Our Correspondent.]
GREYMOUTH, February 25. At a special meeting of the Grey County Council it was decided to raise the amount of the annual license for traction engines from £lO to £SO, and haulers to £l3 10s (same as before) and that the latter be required to be provided with a separate brake for each hauler. The proviso that traction engines shall only be allowed on the roads for five months in the year on account of weather conditions has been rescinded, and the roads will be open for such traffic throughout the year. Motor-cars plying' for hire are to be taxed as follows:—Cars carrying not more than five persons, £2 10s per annum, or £1 10s for six months; cars carrying not more than ten persons £6 per annum, or £3 10s for six months; cars carrying more than ten persons £l2 and £7. No license fee is collectable from owners of motor cars solely in private use. A new by-law provides for the licensing of billiard rooms at an annual fee of £5 per establishment, irrespective of the number of tables. ■ The hours for play are fixed at from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Provision is made against gambling of any kind on such premises, and the Council has power to close premises if the law is broken. This by-law does not apply to hotel billiard rooms.
