SOUTH AFRICAN STRIKE
DEPORTED MEN ON UMGENI
EXPECTED TO BE LANDED AT TILBURY.

The steamer Umgeni, from Cape Town, is expected at Gravesend to-mor-row morning.
It is expected that the deported strikers will bo landed at Tilbury docks.
UMGENI AT GRAVESEND,
STRICT SECRECY PRESERVED. (Received February 25, 12.30 a.m.) LONDON, February 24.
The Umgeni arrived at Gravesend this morning, and a Labour deputation welcomed the deported men. The strictest secrecy was preserved to the last. The owners placed the direction of the vessel in tho hands of the Shipowners’ Mutual Protection Association, which issued sealed orders in the Channel. The Labour representatives insisted on similar reticence. DEPORTED MEN REFUSE TO LEAVE UMGENI. DEMAND RETURN TO SOUTH AFRICA. LONDON, February 24. The newspapers chartered special tugs and made desperate efforts to interview the deported men in the Channel, but failed. A deputation of Labour leaders spent the night at a Tilbury hotel. The deported men refuse to leave the Umgeni, and demand to be faken back to South Africa. They state that they will forcibly resist removal from the ship. THE INDEMNITY BILL. SECOND READING CARRIED. CAPE TOWN, February 24. Th'e Assembly passed the second reading of the Indemnity Bill by 96 to 11.
