ELMWOOD PARK.
CANVASS FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS.
NOT MEETING WITH GOOD RESPONSE.
The response that has met the canvass for subscriptions to aid in the purchase of Elmwood Park has not been encouraging, and unless there is a considerable improvement it is anticipated that the scheme will have bo be abandoned.
The efforts of the Elmwood Park Committee have not met with a ready response, and opposition to the scheme has boon expressed in parts of tho district. It has been urged that the City Council should take over the whole business, and another argument that has been met with is that under all the circumstances of tho purchase the price demanded is too high. The committee, however, is able to lay its hands on a considerable amount, and the fact that it is only £ISOO short of the amount it requires.has led to it holding on to the scheme tenaciously in the hope that tho urgent needs of the district and the city as a whole may lead to a more generous response. The Park, it has been urged, will be a considerable help to sport in tho city, which is at present short of playing areas, and the opportunity for acquiring the land will not remain open much' longer.
