SPORTING.

AN APPEAL UPHELD. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received February 25, 12.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, February 24. The committee of the Australian Jockey Club considered the jockey Emmeraon’s appeal in connection with his suspension. It found that the handling of the horso Strathfield by Emmerson was most unsatisfactory, but there was an element of doubt ns to whether ho rode with dishonest intention, preventing his winning. In view of this and his provious good character, the committee upheld the appeal. Besides removing Emmerson's suspension the decision also removes the disqualifications of twelve months imposed on 'Pyrrol, the trainer, and the horse Strathfield. VICTORIA RACING CLUB. WANGANUI TRAINING NO CBS. [Per Preß3 Association.]

WANGANUI, February 24

The weather was fine for tr tilling operations this morning. Sir Solo cud a good gallop over a mile, and Historiette and Rencontre ran four furlongs in olsec. Bronzo and Expect jumped off at the mile post and ran together for half a mile, whore Parcelino joined in, making tho pace for Bronze. Tho pair finished together, Expect pulling up at tho bend. Sir Knox, Centenary and Sweet Van ran seven furlongs, Centenary and Sweet Van finishing together in lmin 32sec, with Sir Knox, going strongly, close up. Tiresome wont a couple of rounds in attractive style, finishing well. Gipsy Belle galloped six furlongs in lmin lGscc, while Stepney ran a mile in l'min 45sec. St Gate was much too good for Euroco in a schooling task over hurdles. Vocation and Reputation ran at half pace for a couple of rounds, sprinting home. Sin apis, Bon Ton, Sauoi, Culprit, Bon Rc4e, Sea Pink, Brunswick and a number of others did useful work.

The North Island jookey, A. Oliver, has been asked to ride some trotters in their races at Wanganui next Friday and Monday, and has accepted the engagements. He •will thus be kept busy on tho four days (racing and trotting) at Wanganui, and will then go home to Awapuni to fulfil further engagements at the Manawatu Trotting Club’s meeting. If Oliver decides to go on with tho business of riding and driving trotters, his. services arc likely to be in koen demand at some of the big meetings in Canterbury, where we have already had many examples of the successful manner in which a good flat race jockey can handle a pacer.

Bandiera, who was sent to Wanganui some time ago, is reported to be very sore. He has done no strong: work on tho tracks, and, although the swimming exercises he has been treated to may have stood to him to some extent, he cannot be at anything like his best.

Although the Racing Conference judges, in tho recent appeal, decided the question of tho breding of Castalia in favour of Mr J. Hill, tho Avondale. Club is not yet prepared to accept the decision, aud it is understood a legal opinion has been obtained, and that more is likely to be heard of the matter. In nine cases out of ten, racing law and legal opinions do not agree, and it will be decidedly interesting to watch further developments. The Pioneer Handicap at tho South Auckland meeting last Friday was the first case to be decided in the dominion undor the new Rule 31, part eleven, which, in tho case of interference, gives the stewards power where it only affects two horses to' reverse the placing 3if they think such interference affected the result of the race. This was not generally known, writes “ Whalebone,” and the decision of. tho stewards came in for a lot of comment, bb' did the fine of £lO inflicted on tho rider of Kitty Bellairs. Watching tho race closely, I must say there appealed to bo somo interference just before the pbst was reached, but Kitty Bellairs was very tired, and hanging out badly, and it did not seem that Conquest was to blame. Whether the interference affected the actual result will always be a matter of opinion, but, personally, I think that had both horses a clear run, Laird o' Gowrie would have won, and, therefore, in my opinion the stewards’ decision was a correct one. Tho decision that Conquest was to blame I do not agree with, for it appeared from the stand that the interference, although I believe that it affected the result, was accidental.

“ Whalebone,” in the Auckland “ Star,” is responsible for tho following:—Opinions were pretty freely expressed at the recent Te Kuiti meeting that in connection with one event, things were not as they should have been, but as Mr Duncan (tho stipendiary present) took no action the occurrence looked like being passed over. However, certain statements reached tho committee which aroused suspicion, and matters were further complicated by a letter forwarded by one of the club’s officials, with the result that an inquiry has been opened to go into the whole question. A lot of evidence has already been secured, and from what can bo gathered there seems a reasonable prospect of a finding being arrived J at that will do away with tho idea that all sorts of liberties can be taken with country stewards.
