WILLOWBY SCHOOL.
The usual treat and prize-giving took place at this school on Friday, Deo. 23, the room being very tastefully decorated for the occasion. Games were heartily enjoyed till tea was ready (provided, as usual, by the ladies of the district) which repast was both excellent and abundant. After this the competition for boys commenced, whioh was so arranged that while the best runners seoured the most valuabla prizes, every competitor got something, as the winners were not allowed to run again. A prioket ball was kindly presented to the boys for sohool practice by Mrs M'Kenzie. After the sports, the schoolroom was again patronised for the prize distribution. These prizes were liberally subscribed for by the parents and friends. They were encouraged to do this, as overy ohild passed in the respective Standards, and the general remarks of the Inspector (Mr Edge) were the following:—" Very good progress has been made since last examination, and the results, both in quantity and quality, aro far above the average. The teaohers, by their energy and steadiness of purpose, have raised this sohool to a very satisfactory level. The children present entered into tho work of examination with spirit, and showed a praiso worthy desire to acquit themselves creditably." Tho following is tho prize list: -Standard V.-Benjamin Low, 1. Standard IV.—Emily Hayman, 1; Sarah Hayman, 2. Standard lll.—Frederick Smith, 1; Luov Ede, 2; Frank Hawkins, 3; Alice Hawkins, 4. Standard 11. -Rhoda Osborne, 1 5 Margarel; Low and Elizabeth Heasley (equal), 2. Standard I.—William Parish, lj Ellen Parish, 2; Isabel Martin, 3 j Anna Wilson, 4; Mary Meredith, hlsie Low, and Thomas Harris (equal), 6. AH below Standard I. were presented with a nice book each. Sewing prizeß: Ist class.— Sarah Hayman, 1; Susanna E. Low. 2. 2nd claßß.—Lucy Ede, 1. 3rd class.—Margarot Low, 1 5 Eliz&beth Heasley, 2. 4th olaßS. Anna Wilson, 1 5 Alice Smithies, 2; Isabel Martin, 3. The prize giving was interspersed with singing ana reoitation by the toholars, both rendered n creditable style. Nuts,
lollies, and biscuits were kindly supplied gratuitously by Ashburton and Tinwald storekeepers. Appropriate speeches were delivered by Messrs S. S. Ohapmu (Chairman), Martin, Hayman, and Low. Votes of thanks to the Committee, Mr S. 8. Chapman (Chairman of Committee), the teachen, the ladies, and the decorators were carried, and another piece was sung, which brought a very pleasant and profitable affair to a close.
