THE REPORTED ANNEXATION OF RAIATEA BY FRANCE The Daily News publishes a statement to the effect that the French Government repudiates the reported annexation of Raiatea, one of the Society Islands. It is announced that Arabi Bey has been appointed Under-Secretary for War in the Egyptian Ministry. TRIAL OF GUITEAU. WASHINGTON, Jan. 5. The case for the defence of the prisoner Guiteau has now closed, and the trial stands adjourned to Saturday next. COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. LONDON, Jan. 5. Consols are quoted to-day at par. The total reserve in the Bank of England in notes and bullion is £9,800,000. The bank rate of discount remains at 5 per cent; market rate, 4f. New Zealand securities are unchanged at the following quotations:—s per cent 10-40 loan, 104; 5 per cent 1889 loan, 104; 4f per cent 1879-1904 loan, 101|. Colonial breadstuffs are firm. Adelaide wheat, ex store, remains at 575; New Zealand ditto, 535. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 42s 6d. Australian tallow —best beef, 39s 6d; best mutfion, 44s 6d. Tallow is in good demand.
