[Rbutbb'b Txlkgramb.] MELBOURNE, Jak. 4. The Argus to-day publishes a leading article on the subject of the cable tariff between Australia and New Zealand. It approves of the action of the Mel* bourne Chamber of Commerce in endeavouring to obtain a reduction of rates on the New Zealand cable, and condemns the existing anomaly under which the tariff is greater from than it is to Australia. The Argus proposes that the Colonies should acfc jointly to increase the subsidy paid to the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company,, with a view to obtain a reduotion of the tariff. The cricket match between the All England Eleven and Combined Australian team was resumed to-day. The Englishmen continued iheir second innings, and were all disposed of for 308 runs; Sootton not out, 50 ; Shaw caught, 40; Pilling bowled, 3; Peate run out, 2. The homo team then commenced their second innings, and when the stumps were drawn had lost three wiokets for 127. The match was drawn, the Australians still requiring 156 runs to win. Oats are firmer in consequence o£ short supplies. New Zealand feed are quoted at 3s 2d, and milling at 3s 4d. Wheat is quoted at 4b 9d. Sailed —Arawata s.s. for the Bluff. The English cricketers are passengers by her. SYDNEY, Jan. 4. All the small-pox patients are now progressing favourably towards recovery. Sailed—Hero s.s. for New Zealand. BRISBANE, Jan. 4. Mr Archibald Archer has been appointed to the Colonial Treasurcrship, temporarily held by the Hon Thomas M'llwraith, vice Sir Arthur Palmer, who recently accepted the Presidency of the Legislative Council. Mr Archer will
also hold the portfolio of Pablio Instruction. .
