NEW BUILDINGS IN ASHBURTON.
The building spurt which recently started in Ashburton has not jet slackened off, and operations are going on merrily with several’ rather important structures. A -new office has just been commenced for the Bank of New Zealand that will be a credit to the> place, and it will be somewhat notable asbeing the first building erected in Kolmar stone. She workmen are just now busy excavating the fouudations, and work will be commenced forthwith, 'ilia plans have been: prepared by Mr W. B. Armson, of Christchurch, and the design is at once chaste and simple, but at the same time of such a character as to make the bank quite a feature of the street. The stone is bring brought down from the new Kolmar quarry of Messrs Friedlander Bros., and is of the fine creamy colour so much admired in the better class of freestone found in the Mount Somers and Alfred Forest districts. Tne contractors for ■ the building are Messrs Nelson and Coutte In the matter of stone buildings it may also be ■ added that work has commenced on MessrsFriedlander’s new store, the two fr. nts of which—to East and Moore streets—will bo of Kolmar stone. The New Zealand Loan and. Mercantile Company—a recent addition to the business firms of Ashburton —have also begun building a store iu West street, Mr George Compton being the contractor, and it is expected to be finished in a month. Mr TV Bullock has a large grain store of wood and iron just about finished, the great extent of concrete flooring in which is quite an item in itself. Then the two brewery firms in Ashburton have not been idle. Mr George Wood has under way a large brick brewery,, so nearly finished that a week or so will see his first “ browst ” in the rat. The building is quite a land-mark on account of its siae, and shows an amount of enterprise highly commendable. Wood and Co., the old firm, have also found it necessary to build, and soon workmen will bo engaged on very extensive additions to the old premises, in theshape of a malt-house, Ac. In addition to Mr Oookson’s stables, which are about to he-re-built on the site of the old ones just burned down—the material in this cue being also brick and Kolmar stone—the Oddfellows are to start as soon as possible on a hall capable of holding 1000 people. This ball will be in the near vicinity of the stabler above mentioned, and will greatly add to theappearance of the upper pert of the town*.
Trirate residence* are being rapidly built in •rery direction, and all of a better claw than Jim been the rule in the past. It only remains for Government now to join the fashion and sot about building a jadway station to replace the miserably inadequate range of shanties in which the largo railway business of Ashburton has to bo transacted.
