The annual meeting of the North Canterbury Boeing Club came off yesterday, on the Baoeconrse, near Bangiora. The day was beautifully fine, and the attendance large, and, with the exception of the two hurdle races, the sport was first-class. Mr Buss ably filled the position of Judge, and it was pleasant to ohierra Mr Lilly mounted on a gallant grey, and attired in the traditional scarlet, once more efficiently performing the duties of Clerk of the Course. Mr King, as in previous years, wielded the Starters flag successfully, and Mr Hossack got through his new duties as Secretary in a manner deserving of the highest encomium. The usual games of chance on the course were conspicuous by their absence, and the only medium for the investment of spare cash was the totalisator, which Mr Le Sueur conducted to the entire satisfaction of his numerous patrons, and put through altogether the large sum—for a country meeting—of £B9O. Basing commenced with the Hurdle Handicap, for which Young Diomedes had an easy victory, owing to his two opponents coming to grief, and success again attended kirn in the District Handicap Hurdles. The Ashley County Plato, for two-year-olds, produced a field of four, and resulted in a victory for Papapa's handsome daughter ilebecca, who, well ridden by Webster, won by half a length from Koran's neat little daughter Mor. A trio faced the starter for the principal event of the meeting, the North Canterbury Cup, for which Talent was most fancied. Farewell made the running for the first mile and a-half of the journey, Webster riding a waiting race on Flenr-de-Lys, but the moment he called on the Yaldhorst bone he vent to the front, and Talent soon being in trouble, the son of Tradocer easily cut down Farewell in the run homo and won by a length. The Farmers’ Plate fell to Norman, who led from start to finish, Bine Boy being the only one able to get near him, and then three weighed out for the Publicans’ Handicap. Talent was again made a hot favourite, but when Fleur-de-Dys collared him half-a-mile from home, he died the Taldhurst colt, well handled by Webster, won, notwithstanding his 71b penalty, with consummate ease. Talent again disappointed his backers in the Ladies’ Purse, in which Mr Mnrfitt scored his third victory of the day by the aid of Young Diomedes. The District Hack Bace was won by Ladybird, and the Consolation Handicap fell to Farewell, who easily defeated Pippin -and two others. Mor then wont up to Blackbird, but soon fell back, and Webster taking Bebecca to the front, she was never afterwards headed, and sitting still on her, he landed an easy winner by half a length from Mor, who came at a great rate at the finish, and beat Blackbird by a length, for second place. The xnarestililed on passingthesaddling paddock, but her advantage had slightly decreased, and at the back of the course it was evident that Talent had had enough. Webster now sent Fleur-de-Lys along, and getting on terms with Farewell at the home turn, the race was never in doubt, for the son of Tradnoer held his own to the end, and won by a length from Farewell, Talent two lengths away, third.

At the back' of the course Talent drew away from Pippin, with whom Fleur-de-Lys soon got on terms, and a mile from home Talent led Fleur-do-Lys by two lengths. The District Hack Bace was won by Mr W. Tho Auckland Booing Club's Summer Meeting was continued to-day under most auspicious circumstances. The weather was beautiful, tho attendance of the public largo, and the racing excellent. Tho totalisator aid a good business throughout the day, and friendly sweeps went ouas usual. Tho finish for the Facing Club Handicap was most exoiting, The Poet, Tim Wbifiler, and Bandwiok running a grand race. The former just got his head in front in the last stride, and was declared tho winner by a short head. The judge was unable to separate Tim and Bandwiok, so the owners divided the sweepstake. Mr Donne throws in for a good stake over the victory of The Poet. The bookmakers again hud a bad time of it. Dbbbt Stakes, a sweepstake of 10 sovs each, with 10 sovs added. Distance, one mile and a-half. Mr Walters' b o, by Yattendon—Peeress (Wattle) 1 Mr A. Buokland’a b o Smike .. (Hudson) 2 Tho Squire and Hippo—Yatterina filly were scratched. There was very little betting. The Peeress colt had all the beat of tho start, and led by a length coming into the straight. Smike then went up and led him by alongth till opposite the stand, increasing it to a couple of lengths by the time they reached the turn at the bottom of the course. Wattie then moved on the Peeress oolt, and took him into first place, Smike’s rider evidently doing his best to pull tho mouth out of his horse ten lengths in the rear. He could not restrain him, however) for by the time they emerged from the cutting he was alongside his opponent, and Wattie had to move on the favourite. There were loud oriel now of " Smike wins," but his rider running him wide at the turn, Wattie again took the lead. Both came up the straight under the whip, and Wattie had to. ride the son of Peeress in the most desperate manner to squeeze home a winner by a neck. There was a lot of growling at the conclusion of the race, and Hudson’s riding was much questioned by the public, but the (stewards held an investigation into the matter and acquitted him of any dark riding. Publicans’ Pubsb, of 100 sovs, with a sweepstake of 2 sovs each, tho amount accruing from the sweepstake to go to the second horse. Entrance, 2 sovs each, to go to the funds. For two-year-olds and upwards. Winner of Bailway Plate to carry 71bs extra. Distance, one mile. Mr Walters’ b h Billingsgate, aged, 9st 21b (Wattie) 1 Mr D. White's oh a Maori, aged, 9st 21b (Clark) 2 Mr J. Leonard's oh h Othello, 4yrs, 9st 21b (Laing) 3 Miss Domett (Sat 111 b) also started. Betting: 2to 1 on Billingsgate; 2to 1 agst Maori and Othello j 4 to 1 agst Miss Domett. They were despatched to a fair start, Wattie taking Billingsgate to tho front, Miss Domett lying on his quarter, with Othello and Maori a length in the rear. They went on in this order until coming to the cutting, when the two latter closed up to the leaders, and a tablecloth might have covered the lot. As they came for the run home, Wattie was still sitting lightly on the son of Isaac Walton, but the others were all riding to keep up. Billingsgate swept into the straight with a length’s advantage, Miss Domett being second, Maeri third, and Othello fourth. Wattie had them all at the whip opposite the saddling paddock, and finally landed his horse a winner by a length, Maori beating Othello on the post for second place. Time—lmin 49aeo.

Auckland Easing Club Handicap, of 200 sots, with a sweepstake of 5 sots each, the amount accruing from the sweepstakes to go to the second horse, and third horse to save his stakes. Distance, one mile and three-quarters. Mr T. Lonehand (7st), Paraihena (7st)‘, and Vampire (6st 111 b), were scratched. Betting: 6 to 4 agst Tim Whiffler; 3 to 1 Hilda; 5 to 1 The Poet; 7 to 1 Eandwiok ; 10 to 1 Maori; 20 to 1 Moonstone. At the first attempt they were sent away, Lara, Moonstone, and The Poet being abreast, Bandwiok fourth, Tim Whiffler lying eighth, and King Quail last. As they came into the straight Matau was sent to the front, leading Lara and Moonstone by half a length, The Poet and Bandwiok lying next, and Tim Whiffler, hugging the rails, close up. Coming past the stand the positions were Lara, Moonstone, The Poet, Bandwiok, Kenilworth, Tim Whiffler, the rest being all in a cluster. As they swept round the turn at the bottom of the course the sight was a really grand one, the whole twelve being close together. Passing the three-quarter mile post The Poet moved up into second place, and King Quail also strengthened his position, getting ap into fifth place. As they came out of the cutting, Lara’s colours wore seen in the van, and there were loud cries “ Lara wins,” and it certainly looked as if the son of Towton was going to boil the pot over, but Newman, shaking The Poet up, rushed him to the front amidst loud cheers. Wattie was now at work on Bandwick, and he closed up, and, getting the best of Lara in a few strides, assumed second Since. The Poet came into the straight with alf a length advantage of Bandwiok, Lara lying third, and Tim Whiffler fourth. Derritt now called on the favourite, and he answered the call most gamely, and closed up with the leader. The trio were now racing evenly, and, as they approached the winning post, it was anybody’s race. Opposite the saddling paddock the whips were taken out, and the three ran a most desperate race home, The Poet being landed a winner by a short head. Tim Whiffler and Eandwiok ran a dead heat for second place; King Quail was fourth. Time—3min llisec. The winner weighed in amidst enthusiastic cheers. Selling Baob, of 100 Bovs; with a sweepstake of 2 boys each added; entrance 8 Bovs each, to go to the fund; for 2-year-olds and upwards ; winner to be sold by auction immediately after the race for 800 sovs; if entered to be sold for 200 sovs is allowed 71 bs, if for 100 sovs 141bs, if for 50 sovs Ifilbs. Buokland’s b I Stanley, aged, (£100) (M'Qio) 3 Betting; 8 to 1 on Billingsgate. The trio jumped off together, but Billingsgate was lulled back into last place. Stanley took the ead and kept it until coming out of the cutting, when Vampire took first place, Billingsgate lying six lengths in the roar. Coming into tno straight Vampire still led, and it was thought the favourite would bo making up his ground here, but opposite the saddling paddock Wattie moved on his horse, and he went to the front, winning by half a length. Billingsgate was afterwards put up to auction, but was passed in at the reserve. Oband Stand Handicap, of 100 sovs, with a sweepstake of 3 sovs each ; the amount accruing from sweepstakes to go to the second horse; distance, one mile and a quarter. Just before the start Hilda, the favourite, was found to be dead lame, and

was struck out. The betting was 6to 4 against Maid of Honour and Bandwiok, 8 to 1 against Paramena and Vampire. They were sent away to a fair start, Maid of Honour going to the front, with Tenambra second, Retriever third, and. Bandwiok fourth. They went on thus until coming out of .the cutting, when Wattle made his effort, but the son of Barbarian was unequal to the task, and fell back beaten. Maid of Honour came up (he straight full of running, and won by a couple of lengths, Paramena being second, and Tenambra a good third.
