Qsus Fibes.— ■-Two liras oecorrad in the Vorthem District yesterday, which, hot lor the prompt assistance at hand, most have brought about a certain amount of damage. One occurred early in the morning, on Mr B. Blackett’s farm, at Fernsido, which arose from some cut gorse catching fire accidentally. The fire spread to the open section, near the lailway Station, where it was put out. The other fire was at the Ohoka and Xyraton Baeecooree, end created consternation among the persons assembled there, os the horses tied at the horse yards wore in danger of being burnt. Prompt measures were, how* ever, adopted, and the danger was averted.
Bawuioba Bosoogu ScHOots.—A meet* iog of the Committee of these schools was held on Friday evening at the oloeeof the distribution of prizes, when tbo plan and specification of the proposed alteration to the building woe considered. It was decided to accept the tender of Messrs Boyd and Eeir for the work subject to certain ooedi tions. The members present were Messrs Cunningham (Chairman), Ellis, Stephens, and Aheme. The prises as published In Saturday's issue were given by Mr Cunningham in tee -presence of a few of the psrente of the children. The assemblage wae Addressed by Messrs Cunningham, Silts, and Aheme, and the importance of regular attendance at school was dilated upon by Mr Scott. At tbo conclusion the tore gave vigorous cheers for the teachers end Committee,
Cabltoh School.—A picnic la connection with the O&rlfcon School was held on Deo. 23. when about 100 persons (including children) assembled at Bennetts Junction, and drove to Glentui Bush, distant about eight miles. On arrival there, various parties were mode up for a ramble through the beautiful bush and gullies for which the glen is noted. The Committee deserve great credit for the manner hi which the arrangements were carried out. The master and mistress. Mr W. A. Bonis and Miss Sophia Dohrmann, were at their noils helping the children to enjoy themselves. After partaking of an excellent luncheon, and scrambling for nuts and lollies, some races were jot up amongst the parents and children. The party started for home at 0 p.m., reaching the school about 7.30 p.m., when each child received a present from off the Christmas tree, and all appeared to be well pleased with their day’s outing.

Those present were unanimous in endeavouring to persuade Mr Boon that though some may nave differed from his view of the case re* fsrred to, it In no way reflected on his ruling as Chairman, but without avail, and after an uncomfortable pause, Mr Browne was per* euaded to preside in order to enable business to be gone on will). She Honorary Treasurer (Mr L. C. Williams) then read a supple* mentary balance-sheet, all the subscription! not being paid, which was passed, and the speaker said that Iho e nooses of the meeting was due to the indefatigable exertions of the Honorary Treasurer (Mr Ferrar). Mammoth UiustßXte.—A performance woe given last evening In the Oddfellows' Hall, Lichfield strait, by a troupe of amateurs styling themselves tho Mammoth Minstrels. There was a moderate attendance, but the various items of the programme were well received. Tho troupe purpose giving a performance shortly in old of the fund for the relief of the two men who wore recently drowned in (he Hestfacote. Iiari.BOTBU Lion?.—Captain J. W. Clarke, of the Harbour Board’s steamer Lyttelton, report# an instance of reflected light witnessed on his trip down to Timeru with the City of Cashmere in tow. Akaroa light was lost eight of at 11.16 p.m. on Friday, and just after 3 a.m. on Saturday the Engineer of the tug called Captain Clarke's attention to some flashes of light in the clouds as tom of the vessel. These were watched and found to recur every ten seconds, and were probably the reflection of the flashes of light from the Akaroa lighthouse, as that light flashes every ten seconds.
Qaihxy Tmbatbb.—At the Christy Theatre last night every seat was occupied by a holiday audlenoe, for whom the management catered a most appetising programme, consisting of "An hoar in Seville" and the eras a Christmas pantomime "The Isle of Tulipatam." The member* of tho Company acquitted themselves wonderfully well, and succeeded in delighting the audience, who were most demonstrative in their applause. Miss Amy Horton was very successful with a local song, in which the topics touched upon appeared to greatly tickle those present The pantomime was provocative of the usual amount of mirth, and was unusually free from the mishaps generally noticeable in a first performance. A* the same programme is to be repeated this evening, we reeerve a longer notice till to-morrow morning.
Dspids’ Exotmaiow to Piokon Bat.— One of the most successful excursions of the season took piece yesterday. The brethren of the Atholatan lodge mustered in good number*, with their friends, at Lyttelton, at 0,80 a.m. 5 In feet, the numbers were so large that many wen reluctantly left behind.• The Lyttelton Brass Band accompanied the party, and daring the passage there and back enlivened tbe company with some very well rendered mono. Amusements of various descriptions were fully enjoyed by all. In abort, the whole of the proceedings were sufficiently gratifying to encourage the promotion of suoh excursions in the future. Great credit is attributable to the Committee of Manege* meat for the meaner In which affairs were carried oat, and the courteous conduct of Captain Cameron added greatly to the plea* sure of the day's outing. Boxura Bat nr Pom.—The Bert looked quite gey yesterday, which was kept a close holiday. The supping were gaily dnaeed with banting, as were the hotels and various buildings In the town. Excursions to Pigeon Bay by the Titan, to Little Akaloa by the e.s. Akaroa, and Governor’s Bay by tbe Lyttelton, and Waiwera, were all most liberally patronised, fine weather inducing a great number of people to avail themselves of & pleasurable outing. The members of the various Friendly Societies mustered at the Oddfellows' Hall shortly alter half*past eight, and at nine a procession was formed, and headed by the Lyttelton Band, marched to the railway station, and proceeded to Christchurch, to take port in the fste. A large number of people visited the Port during the day, and amused themselves round (the wharves and breakwater and in visiting the shipping. Stbbsx AcomsHtn.—As two young ladies were in charge of a one-horse buggy in Victoria street, about 10 a.m. yesterday, the animal attached to the vehicle bolted, and dashed down to Colombo street turning into Gloucester street to the Sink, from where the buggy had been hired. On entering tbe statues the vehicle was brought into collision with the gate-post and canted over breaking the splash-board and severely cutting the horse's hind legs. The occupants were thrown out, but were saved from Injury by a stableman named Oarnov, who broke their fall at considerable risk to himself, while Mr Belamain secured the horse.—About halfpast twelve one of the horses drawing a fourwheeled cab tripped on the tram rails b Cathedral square and fell, dragging his companion with him. The cabman stuck to his reins, and tbe vehicle was not overturned. The bones wen liberated from the vehicle without any injury having been done beyood some damage to the harness. PlOKlO.—Among the holiday-makers of yesterday those who attended tbe Catholic picnic certainly did not enjoy themselves the least. The excursionists marched to the railway station, to the strains of the Hibernian Band, about 11 o'clock, and then were conveyed by special train, which they completely filled, to the racecourse. Here every arrangement had been made for tbe carrying out of a capital programme of sports, the result of which was the winning of some valuable prises by adults, and some very pleasing prises by children. Tbeßev Father O'Donnell was among those present, as also were many of the parents of tbe children. For the lastnamed abundant light refreshments bad been provided, while for tbe adults a booth supBlied8 lied what was necessary. During the day to band played some eseellent selections. At hall-past five the party left the course, and on reaching town most of them went to the Catholic Church where “ Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament" look place. This closed what must have been a most enjoyable day.
