WEST OXFORD. Tie annua! examination ot tbie school took place os Tuesday last. It was intended that the ilers Messrs Sheldon, M'Oslltun, and Mr Dobson should hare been the examiners on the occasion, but the last two gentlemen being unavoidably absent, their places were filled by 53r White, the Chairman, and Mr M’Keuzie, another member of the School Committee, who kindly consented to share the duties of the day with the fisv Mr Sheldon. Msidamee Liters and Prichard kindly lent their services in deciding the needlework prises. The task of the ox* amioers was not always easy, owing to the equality of the work of many of the pupils. On Thursday, the pupils met for the distribution of the prizos. The hour of assembling was I p.ta., but all the forenoon was occupied by the elder scholars in decorating the rooms of the school, and they certainly did their work with great taste. In the south room were arranged the drawing and writing specimens done by the scholars during the year. The programme of the day was opened by Miss Chapman, the schoolmistress, conducting her infant classes through a series of songs. Each child then received a large picture book, and the class was dismissed for the day. After » short interval, the rest of tbs scholars met in the north room, where the various prises were displayed. Hers the head master, Mr Gutbbert, exercised his pupils in a number of school soon, alter which the distribution of prim took placej Mr White, the Chairman, prefacing bis pltseing doty by a lew well* chosen remarks, and giving a word of advise or encouragement to each one os he or she stepped forward to receive reword. Three cheers were then given by the scholars lor their teachers, for the Chairman, and for the visitors j and after the singing of the National Auf cm, the school was dismissed for the Christmas holidays, which extend until Jon, 23,1882, and probably, as the Chairmen said, a *«» longer. Beattie, 11. A., and Mr Joseph Ward, the distribution of prizes took place in the main school buildbg yesterday. Some 400 or so children were present, along with many friends and parents, and Mr G, IE St BUI, the Chairman of the School Committee, distributed the prizes to the successful pupils, addressing words of commendation and encouragement to each. Addresses were also delivered by Meesr* Beattie and Ward, and at tbo close of tbo proceeding#, Miss Kmtn% Bean, tbo dug of lb® school, mode a presentation, in the name of her fellow pupils, to Mr and Mrs Stott, the head*master and his wife. The presentation consisted of a handsome signet ring for Mr Stott, and an equally valuable loekst for Mrs Stott. Mr Stott suitably acknowledged the gin, and the proceedings cloved.
