In the Cortes to-day, Seaor Armio, Minister for Foreign Affairs, announced that a protest had been recently sent by Spain to England against the charter granted to tbe North Borneo Trading Company, and that diplomatic correspondence was now proceeding between the British and Spanish Governments in regard to the matter.

THREATENED HOSTILITY OF ITALY. ROME, Dec. 22. Ib the Chamber of Deputies to-day Signor Manoini, Minister for Foreign Affairs made a statement, to the effect that the Italian Government would not recognise the Treaty concluded between the Bey and France, and was carefully watching the action of the latter country in Tonis. England, Signor Mannini added, had tacitly accepted the Franoo-Tonisian Treaty. COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. LONDON, Deo. 22. Consols have advanced to 99f. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £11,250,000. Bank rate of discount remains at 5 per cent; market rate at sf. New Zealand securities are unchanged. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, remains at 56s ; New Zealand ditto, 525: Adelaide floor, ex store, 41s €d. Australian tallow —Best beef, 39s 6d; best mnfcton, 44s 6d.
