BOROUGH OF ST ALBANS.

ELECTION OF OODNCILLOBB. The polling for the election of Councillors for the newly constituted borough of 8t Albans took piece yesterday at the Avon Boad Board Office, Papanui Bead, Ur W. F. Beatson acting as Beturning Officer. A cob* •iderable amount of interest was taken in the proceedings throughout the Borough, and as there were 16 candidates for the nine seats, the supporters of each had to exert them* selves to secure the return of their favourites. Several vehicles were employed in bringing up the voters, and a small crowd was gathered round the polling place during the greater part of the day. In the morning the polling was not very brisk, though tolerably steady, but in the afternoon it became somewhat more animated. The chances of the candidates were, oa usual, freely discussed by the few individuals gathered around the Boad Board office, bat it was evident that the election was being conducted is a good spirit, as not the least ill-feeling was manifested. Upwards of 70 persons assembled round the polling place shortly after the hour of closing, 6 p.m., hat this number bod decreased considerably when at 10.80 p.m. the Betara-ing-Officer came forward and announced the result of the voting as follows : J. Brookcr ... ... 69 D. Pino 59 E. Green 41 He thefore declared Messrs Mann, Blakis ton, Moor, Bonntree, Money, Bull, Matson, Turner and Dickenson duly elected os Councillors for the Borough of St Albans. The announcement was received with cheers, and those present then dispersed.
