Amongst the prizes to be competed for at the Caledonian Bociety's sports, Ashburton, on Boxing Bay, is a very well executed medal, the gift of Mrs J. F. Butler, and the work of Mr B. Murray, jeweller, Ashburton. The medal will be presented to the best Irish jig dancer. Lytmitob Bobocqh School.— An entertainment was siren at the Oddfellows’ Hall on Wednesday in aid of the prise fund of this school. The various items in the programme were contributed by local amateurs, and the Lyttelton Brass Band played several excellent selections during the evening. There was a very fair house, and the entertainment passed off most satisfactorily. Lowhb Hsathcotb Backs.—' These race* take place at the racecourse, Heaiboote, on Boxing Bay. Judging from the acceptances in each event, and provided the weather bo fine, the meeting promises a capital day’s sport. The programme contains eight races, the first starting at 12.45 p.m. sharp. One of Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin’s totaluatora will be on the ground. Coaches will run at all times of the day, atarting from the White Hart, Morton’s, &e., for the racecourse.

Wright, M H.R., the children attending the Ashburton Borough school* left by special train, kindly provided by Mr Wright, for that gentleman’s estate at Windermere yesterday morning. The train started at 9 o'clock, and conveyed about 500 children to Windermere, where they were suitably entertained, and spent the day as agreeably as a stiff nor’-wester would let them. The teachers and several members of the School Committee accompanied the children. Abtillbbt Babb.—A promenade concert was given last evening on the parade ground by the Christchurch Artillery Band. There was a fair attendance, and the selections performed were gone through in a highly sat isfactory manner. The audience testified their appreciation by eoreral encores, which, however, could not be responded to on account of the length of the programme. One item so honoured, and wmeh is deserving of special mention, was a quartette, ‘’Home they brought her warrior dead," for two cornet*, tenor horn and euphonium. A polka “ Lyric,” with cornet obligato, was also Worthy of high Smite. Mr A. Hamilton, Bandmaster, connoted. Oath bubal Sbbvicbs.—A list of the Ohri'tmas services at the Cathedral will be found elsewhere. Beside# the four services on Christmas Day, there will be a Vigil Service on Saturday, at 7.90 p.m., at which Christmas carols will be sung. The collection at (his service will be devoted to a purpose which will meet with general approbation, vis., "The Choir Boys* Recreation Fund.” As the boys cannot be spared from the Cathedral during the school holidays ,th« Precentor is taking them to Lyttelton twice a week, and the fond has been started to cover the expenves of these excursions, and also to Srovido a library and other amusements for iem during the winter. A telegram from Mr John Urigg was read offering a suitable site for a factory for £lB per acre, taking £5 per acre in fully paid up shares as a deposit, the balance of the purchase money to lie at 7 per cent for ten years. He would probably take more shares if satisSed with the mode of working.
