THE LEMMING.
The Norwegian lemming ia an animal about the sire of a mouse. They live under the stones in summer, under the enow in winter. They hiss and bite. About once in ten years they migrate in large armies. They march in a straight line. They cross lakes and rirers, and will go straight through hay-stacks rather than go around. Nothing stops them, not dree, cascades, or swamps. If a man stands in their way they will jump at him as high as his knee. If struck they will turn round and bark and bite like a dog. Foxes, lynxs, owls, hawks and weasels will follow them and destroy large numbers of them, bat it does not check them. They continue their course until they reach the eea, Into which they plunge, persistent and progressive until the waves exterminate them.
