AKAROA COUNTY COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the Akaroa County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Duvauohelle’s Bay, on Saturday last; present—Messrs T. 8. Baker (Chairman), W. Barnett, G. S. Fleming, J. Gebbie, Q. B. Joblin, W. T. Masefield, J. Pettigrew and Bev B. B. Bradley. CHAIBHAU’3 STATEMENT, The Chairman made the following statement: —Since last meeting a petition has been filed in the Besident Magistrate’s Oonrt, Akaroa, protesting against the election of Mr J. B. Barker as Councillor for the Okain’s Bay riding, on the ground of illegal voting, and at the Court of Enquiry duly held for the purpose the Besident Magistrate declared the election of the said Mr Barker, on Nov. 26, void. The Clerk, on the receipt of the notice from the Besident Magistrate, instructed the Betumilig-Ofilcer to take the necessary steps to have the extraordinary vacancy filled. The first business for consideration to-day is Mr G. Armstrong’s claim for compensation for land taken under “The Public Works Act,” for the extension of the Balguorie road, which is as follows: £3O for land and £l2O for fencing. He (the Chairman) thought that the steps they should take were to offer Mr Armstrong tho amount due for the land, as it had been' distinctly understood that the fencing was only to be erected when necessary, or allow the matter to be settled by an Assessment Court, as provided by tho “ Public Works Act.” The closing of part of the old drain's Bay road, which was to have been considered to-day, will have to be deferred until next meeting, as sufficient data have not been received from the Chain's Bay Boad Board. BAXGtTEBIB BOAD. A letter was read from Mr G. Armstrong, enclosing claim for compensation for land taken for the Balguerie road. The Clerk having read some minutes bearing on this claim, after some discussion on the motion of Mr Masefield, it was resolved to write to Mr Armstrong, offering him the sum of £3O (being at the rate of £lO per acre) for land taken for the Balguerie road, and that he be informed that the Council will pay for fencing the said land, when the fence is erected as per this agreement made with the Council on Slay 29,1880. MOUNT BOSON BOAS. A letter was received from the Akaroa and Wainui Boad Board, stating that the Board has resolved to call for tenders for opening the Mount Bossu road through Bhodes’ flat, Wainui. It was resolved that a copy of the Board’s letter be forwarded to Mr A. 0. Knight. THB OLD STTVAUCHBLIB’S AND LB DON’S BAT BOAD. From the Akaroa and Wainui Boad Board, asking for the Chairman’s certificate required under section 6 of tho “ Public Works Act, 1880,” for the sale of the land contained in the old Duvauohelle’a andLe Son’s Bay roads. It was resolved, that the Clerk be instructed to forward all the papers connected with the closing of these roads to the Council’s solicitor, and if found correct, ask them to forward the necessary certificates for the Chairman’s signature. From Mr 0. Wahnsley, Wainui, resigning his appointment of Begistrar of Dogs for the Wainm district. Resolved, that the resignation be accepted. “ FENCING ACT, 1881.”
Mr Masefield asked if ifc was not necessary for the Council to adopt the Fencing Act passed lost session. The Chairman stated that it was not necessary for the Council to adopt the Act, os the Act will come into force on Jan. 1 nest; but under section.*lo of the <l Fencing Act, 1881," the Council of any County (where the whole of the Act is in force) may, by resolution, request the Governor to suspend the operation of the Act within such County, and may in a like manner request the Governor, who may by proclamation bricg it into force again. BBQIBTSATIOK OK DOOB. Mr Gebbie stated that the police in Tai Tapu and Port Victoria Riding were summoning everybody who had unregistered dogs in their possession, but complained of having no list of those who had registered their dogs. After some discussion, it was resolved to request the Registrars to furnish the police with the names of persons who had registered their dogs during the past year. MOXXOK Of MOTION. Mr Joblin gave notice that at the next .meeting of this Council ho would move— That this Council take steps for the protection of that portion of the Akaroa and Little River railway that passes through the Lake Ellesmere reserve, and also for the immediate utilisation of the said reserve.”
ACCOUNTS. After pasting accounts to the amount of £52 0* 9d, the Council adjourned to Jan. 28 next.
