ASCENT OF TONGARIRO.
[Pun Pbsss Association.]
TAUPO, Dec. 10. An ascent to tho volcano of Tongariro was successfully made by Mr Manion, on American tourist, who, with five guides, climbed to tho summit of the crater of Orooa oh Wednesday last. He describes tho volcano as being active, a geyser throwing streams of boiling mud fully 600 ft high. Tho interior of the cone is surrounded by some thirty or more boiling springs and sulphur steam holes. The altitude on the summit of tho cone is 7660 ft. The thermometer registered six degrees below zero. The parly were compelled, through a snow-storm, to remain in the crater all night; and they nearly perisksd with cold. Mr Man son is the first Pakeha whom tho Ngatitamira have permitted to make tho ascent of tho Sacred Mountain. Others have attempted it, but were captured by Natives and turned back. Tho Natives bavo namo Mr Manson “Tongariro.” Tho burning mountain is in the King country j and this concession to a Pakeha may bo considered as strong evidence of tho good feeling of tho Natives, and of tho gradual break up of the animosities which have hitherto existed between the two races.
