DUTY ON NEW ZEALAND WOOL.

[Pub punas Association.] DUNEDIN, Duo. 19. A special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held at 2.30 I to consider the question of co-operating with the other Chambers of Commerce tu this Colony, and with the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, to induce the American Legislature to reduce the duty on New Zealand wools. Tho Chairmen, Mr Larnoch, in opening tho proceedings, drew attention to tho fact that while Otago alone imported more by £160,000 from tho United Stales than tho total exports of the Colony to that country bod been t tho imports thence had been daring three years over .€1,000,000. The following report from the Sub-Committee was adopted Having carefully considered the matter referred to us, wo are of opinion that the Chamber of Commerce should support, by every means in its power, tho efforts of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company to induce the American Legislature to remove the duty on Now Zealand wool imported into America, and we are further of opinion that all kinds of merino and crosa-breds grown in Otago are suitable for the American market if the duty were removed.” The Chairman suggested that a representative should be sent to not in concert with Sir Henry Parkes at Washington, and the Agent-General and Sir Julius Vogel were mentioned as tho most suitable. Eventually, the following motion was carried: —“That this Chamber highly approve the action of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, and will give its hearty support to any measures calculated to induce the American Government to admit New Zealand wool at a reduced tariff, and that while this Chamber learn with satisfaction that Sir Henry Parkes has been authorised to represent this Colony, they are of opinion that no practical good will result unless followed by sending a special representative to Washington to press upon the Congress New Zealand interests."
