CITY IMPROVEMENTS.

A further Improvement is about to be made in the appearance of Colombo street south, by the erection of a three storey building for Messrs Beauchamp and 8011, on the section southward of Mr Reece’s, ironmonger. The designs for the new premises havo been prepared by Mr W. U. Hsponett, architect, who has kindly furnished us with a few details of the structure. It ia to be built of brick, upon the usual concrete foundation, and with an iron roof. The frontage will bo 37ft, the depth rather more than 66ft, and the height of the front 46ft. The ground floor front it to be of a grey stone obtained from near Greymoutb, which is stated to be somewhat similar to the "Robin Hood” stone used is the midland counties of England, and to which it is consequently proposed to apply

the same name. Thin portion of the front will be lighted by tao large plate-glam windows, with carved cedar frames. The upper part of the front ia to oonsiat of brick-work, with dreitingi of Oamaru atone. On each ot the upper floors are to bo three circular headed window*. The front, which is of a plain but effective design, will be surmounted by a moulded cornice and parapet. Some slight ornamental carving is to be executed on the window mouldings and oth«r portions of the front. Each storey will contain one large room, with small offices at the back. That on the ground floor is to be devoted to the purpose of a sale-room, while the two upper rooms will be used for storage purposes. It may bo mentioned that, in addition to windows at the front and back of the building, light will be communicated to all three rooms by means of a large skylight, well-boles being provided in the floors to admit the light to the lower rooms.
