EAST CHRISTCHURCH EDUCATIONAL DISTRICT.
The Educational District known as Christchurch East was, by resolution of the Board of Education, passed on Nov. 28 last, declared to be divided into two districts—Richmond and Christchurch East. The former includes the north-east portion of the original district in which the Bingsland School is situated, the boundary line between the two districts passing along Hill’s road, the Bast Town Belt, the River Avon, and the Canal Reserve. In pursuance of a notice issued by the Board of Education, a meeting of householders wm held in the Bingsland School hut evening at seven o'clock, for the purpose of electing • School Committee for the new district of Richmond. MrU. B. Taylor was voted to the chair. Mr Swann, at the Chairman’s request, road the advertisement convening the meeting. The Chairman said the first business was to confirm the proposed boundaries of the new district, and next to elect a School Committee. Mr Flesher proposed—" That this meeting approves of the boundaries of the proposed school district of Richmond, as set out and described in a notice published in the Lyttelton Timet newspaper of Nov. 89 last." The speaker explained that a number of the inhabitants of the locality had come to the conclusion that it was advisable to form a separate educational district for Bingsland, and a number of gentlemen had interviewed the East Christchurch School Committee, who were agreeable to the division ot the district being brought about, and the boundaries as stated were also agreed upon. A petition had been sent to the Board of Education from certain householders of Bingsland, praying that their district might be constituted a separate one, which had been acceded to, and hence the present meeting. Mr Bwann seconded the motion, which was put and carried unanimously. In answer to a question, Mr Flesher said he had received a letter from the Secretary of the Board of Education, which stated that the Committee elected at that meeting would not take office till January 1,1888, when the division would take place, and aa the general election of School Committees would take place on the fourth Monday in January, their duties would bo little more than nominal. The letter also stated that the Board had been in some doubt as to the proper course to pursue in the case of a division of an established district, but after obtaining legal advice, had decided on the one they had adopted.
The meeting then proceeded to the election of a School Committee, when the following were chosen t —Messrs W. Flesher, W. Kerr, Hugh Hepburn, John Hunter, G. Swann, W. Pearce, and W. Beigan. This concluded the business, and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
At a meeting of the recently elected Committee, held at the close of the public meeting, Mr W. Flesher waa chosen Chairman.
A meeting of the householder# of the East Christchurch Educational District was called by the Board of Education for last evening, for the purpose of electing a new School Committee, in consequence of the division of the original district into two districts Eiohmopd and Christchurch Boat. The meeting, however, did not take place, as up to eight o'clock only two householders put in an appearance. It 11 understood that the members of the East Christchurch School Committee, elected in January last, consider that the action of the Board in dividing the district has not deprived them of their office, but that they continue to exercise authority In matters educational, over that portion of the old district now designated Christchurch East, without having to undergo re-election until the fourth Monday in January next.
