ROAD BOARDS.

SOUTH BAKAIA. The adjourned regular meeting of the shore Board wo* held on Friday, Dee. 9; present—Messrs 0. N. Mackis (Chairman), E. 8. Goiter and W. L. Allan.—Mr W. Compton, overseer of Mount Hnttßoad Board, wailed on the Board and handed in a resolution passed by that Board at their last meeting in reference to the storm-water drainage scheme, and stated that it wai estimated that the work would cost in it* entirety about £2BOO. The Board expressed themselves in faronr of the scheme submitted, but would not give an answer until a full meeting of the Board had discussed the question. The following is tha resolution passed by the Monet Hutt Board: —“ That this Board is prepared to support some snch scheme of drainage as that discussed at the meeting of the South Bakaia and Mount Halt Eoad Boards, and that the plans and estimates, when prepared, be submitted to the South Bakaia Boed Board lor their co-operation, and finally to the County Council, with a re* quest for their approval and assistance in. carrying it out. Seeing that the amount of acreage benefited in the South Bakaia district is much larger than that of the Mount Hutt, the proportion of the expense should be borne as follows:—Mount Hutt, one quarter; South Bakaia, half; County Council, one quarter." It was resolved —“ That a special meeting be held to consider the scheme.” —Mr H. Strothers waited on the Board with reference to contract for forming M'Phail’s road, and stated that the Clerk would not pas* his work. It was resolved—“ That tha Chairman and Mr Coster visit the work with the Clerk.”—Mr F. Brown also claimed for extra work., said to be done on the Plantation road. It was resolved—“ That his claim could not he entertained.”—Correspondence wag read:—From the Wakanui Eoad Board, asking this Board to contribute a share of the expense they bad incurred in getting up a memorial in reduction of the railway tariff. On the motion of Mr Coster, seconded by Mr Allan, it was resolved —“Tbat the Wakanui Boad Board be informed that if the other local bodies agreed to bear part of the expense, this Board would pay their share.”— From the Ashburton County Council, with reference to building a cottage on Burnt Island for the use of the ferryman, and stating that they were in communication with the Selwyn County Council in the matter. —From Mr W. J. Hussy, drawing the attention of the Board to the dangerous state of Thompson’* track from one of the flnmings for the waterrace. It was resolved that a culvert be placed under the Hunting, and that the place he made safe for traffic.—The Clerk was instructed to let two open crossings to Mr Dent to make on.Mitcbam’s road, at £8 each; also to allow Mr Bogers to plough and sow a piece of road near his land with grass seed, under his supervision.—A petition was received from residents in the township, asking to have the road formed from the main river road to the Cemetery. It was resolved to form the road from the Cemetery along the Acton fence towards the township. Tenders were received for compiling the rateroll far 1882, and that of Mr Oxley for £l9 10s was accepted.—Accounts amounting to £203 5s were submitted and passed for pay ment, and the Board adjourned. COURTENAY. A meeting of this Board was held os Tuesday ; present—Hon Colonel Brett (Chairman), Messrs Mathias, Gough and Hay.— The Surveyor read his report, and it was adopted.—lt was resolved—“ That, whereas certain private individuals, without the sanction of the Board, have cut into and damaged some of the public roads in the district for the purpose of carrying water from the Malvern water-race to their properties, tha Surveyor be authorised to request them to immediately place the reads in their former condition, and to advertise that in future any person found cutting the public road for the above purpose, without leave from the Board being first obtained, will be prosecuted without further notice.”—lt was resolved —“That all culverts or connections for carrying water from the Malvern water-race that may be allowed by the Board to bo put across roads by the owners or occupiers of land interested, shall bo of the full width of the road, including the ditches, end put in at a sufficient depth not to interfere with the existing watertable. Resolved authorised to write to the owners of block No 19 on the water-race district map giving them permission to bring a branch of the race through the Board’s property at Kirwco, subject to the approval of the Surveyor.”— Correspondence was read as follows : —From the Bank of New Zealand re fixed deposit of the Board. From the Board’s solicitors forwarding copies of licenses to be granted by the Board, and signed by persons desirous of putting in culverts or connections for carrying water across the public roads of the district.—From Mr F. Weave, undertaking to re-imburso the Boad Board for any expanse that may be incurred by the stopping of road running through his land, over and above whatever the sale of the land when the road is declared stopped, may realise. —From Mr James Dysart, and other tatepayers, requesting the Board will cause road known as Cook’s road to be re-formed. Deferred till other works are being let by the Board.—lt was resolved that the annual meeting of ratepayers be held on Jan. 3, 1882, at 11 a.m.; that the nomination of candidates to servo on the Board in the room of two members who retire by rotation, tako place on the same day, before noon j and that Mr A. J. Francis bo appointed ReturningOffioer under the “Regulation of Local Elections Act, 1876."—The pay-sheet, ataoun ling to £516 5s 3d, having been adopted and passed for payment, the Board adj ’u-j-ieL^
