ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council woe held on Monday evening; present —the Mayor, Councillors Bollock, 8t Hill, B. Friedlander, Roberts, Parkin, Orr and Harrison. riBASoa. The Mayor said the overdraft at the bank was £1591 7s lid, and income to the amount of £lll9s had been received since lost meeting. He said that the subsidy for the year had been received from Government amounting to £421 4a 6d, lees £245 deducted for charitable aid, Ac, leaving £176 4s 8d to go to the Borough's credit. Some discussion took place on this subject, and ultimately a Committee was appointed to consider and report on the subject of adminitiration of charitable aid in the district. PBXITIOHB, Councillor Harrison presented a petition from burgesses praying for the opening of the crossing over the railway line at Havelock street. The petition showed that the removal of the engine shed also removed the only objections that could possibly be raised against the opening of the crossing. It would be a great boon to the public, especially those who required to use vehicles. It wo* resolved to forward the petition to the Minister for Public Works, with a strong recommendation that it be granted. Councillor Harrison also presented a petition from burgesses resident in Moore street, praying for the Council's intervention to prevent the establishment in their vicinity of a soap-boiling works, which they looked upon as a nuisance.
It wm pointed out that action could be taken in the matter when a license was asked for j but a Councillor added that no euoh works were purposed to be established, the premises referred to being only intended for a store, the works to be erected outside tho town. VJBB imbpxotob’s eepout. Tho Fira Inspector reported on tho recent fire at Cookson’# stables in Wills street on Dec. 3. Ho complimented the Brigade on their plucky salvation of Saunders 7 building, and wont on to recommend tbs rectifying of a fault in the pipes conveying the water supply from the reservoir to the Postoffice corner; tho consideration of purchasing a steam engine; and other minor matters. Ho rendered a bill of £l2 16s, expenses in connection with tho fire.
The Engineer explained that the fault referred to by the Fire Inspector was being attended to. Tho suggestion re a steam engine was deferred till next meeting; tho

Councillor bt Hilt renewed the discussion on this question, and ultimately his motion wa# carried for the inviting of tenders both for gai and kerosene for street lighting with a view to ascertaining the difference in cost between the two. The Mayor announced that the annual meeting would be held on Pec. SI, on which occasion he would deliver his farewell address. tun noMDAvs. Inconsequence of next meeting night in the ordinary course being on Boxing Day, it was resolved to hold no meeting tilt the second Monday after Deo. 20. The Christmas holidays for the employee* were then arranged, and the Council adjourned.
