i PIGEON BAY BOARDING SCHOOL AND ACADEMY. THIS institution' is nbw opfehed, under tHe eliar'ge' of Mr.' J. W. Gillespie, recently Stead' Master of the Free Church Schools, in Air- ; drie, Lanarkshire. i Pupils are instructed in all the ordinary branches :of a; liberal English education,, and also in French, Iliatin, G^reek, and ilathematics. i Young gentlemen are received as boarders at £45 a-year, under io years of age, and at £55 a-year above that age. These terms include wash- . ing, arid jalso the fees for tuition. ] Mr. Gillespie'e name stands in the first-.class of certificated masters, as annually published in the raihuteß pf her Majesty't Privy Council on education. His experience during nine years in his late position has rendered him thoroughly conversant with the details as well as with the theory of his profession. ..„■,. The. locality,of this establishment is one of the most beautiful and most, salubrious iv New Zealand, and is easily reached from Port lyttelton in three or four hours, either by land or water. The house occupied by Mr; Gillespie is large, airy, and substantial, containing twelve rooms % it is surrounded by a lawn of two acres, and stands within two minutes' walk of theschool house. Every attention will be paid to the religious and moral training' 6f the youths attending the Academy. FJSOM'TEtE REV. WM.' JACKSON, A'.lt., M±NIBTEi; OF ,FREE WEST dHXJECg, AIRDRIEi Mr, James W. Gillespie has been/known to me for the last seven years, during which- period h& has taught the academy in connection with my congregation. I have formed the very highest opinion of him, as a man, a Christian, and an insrructor of youth. His natural talents are of a very high order—his dispositions ainiable-^and his habits active and laborious. His literary attainments, also, are very great, as . well as his knowledge' of the Mathematics and Classics. The schpbls under his care" have flourished very much, and exceeded in usefulness the expectations of their founders. REIOBTS ON FREE WEST CHURCH SCHOOLS, AIBDRIB, BY H.M. TENIJANT, ESQ., SHEBIPFSUBSIITUTE FOR LANARKSHIRE. I have much, pleasure.in stating, from my own knowledge of Mr. Gillespiey that he is a gentleman of intelligence, of an excellent education, and that he has interested himself in schemes of benevolence for the benefit of the poorer classes in this district. He has proved himself to be an efficient and very successful teacher in the school which, is at present under his charge. FROM WILLIAM CLARKE, M.D., ESQ., OF WESTEE MOFFAT, PRINCIPAL FOUNDER OF THE NEW COLLEGE, GLASGOW. I hereby certify, that as one of those who took a deep interest in the erection arid success of the Free West Church Schools, Airdrie, I have had my attention, since the commencement of the institution, very much directed to the conduct of Mr. Gillespie,. who was then elected Head Master. I can say, that so far as I could judge or hear from others, ne has given the utmost satisfaction to all concerned. He has been most indefatigable in his attention and exemplary and correct in his conduct, and, as a consequence, his success has been much greater than Was anticipated by the promoters of the institution. FROM THOS. TOREANCE, ESQ., SURGEON, AIRDEIE, . JUSTICE OF PEACE, COUNTY OF LANAEK. Mr, J. W. Gillespie-.has held the situation of Head Master of Free West here since its establishment—a period of eight years—the pupils in which, at present, I believe, number between three and four hundred. Mr. GiUespie's qualifications as a teacher of youth, and for the superintendence of an educational establishment, may be considered first class, being possessed of great professional knowledge and energy of character, infusing a similar spirit into the minds of his pupils. His method of teaching is according to .the most approved plan. Mr. Gillespie's disposition and high moral and religious character, render bim in an eminent degree suitable for having the superintendence of youth.; Fm-ther particulars may be, learned on application (personally or by letter) to Mr. Gillespie, Pigeon Bay; or to the Rev. Chas. Fraser, Minister of St. Andrew's Church, Christchurch. Christchurch, May 18,1859.
