Local Intelligence.

We have authority to state that the General Government has. considered the propriety of appointing a Resident Magistrate: specially for Lyttelton, and has selected Mr. A. Chetham Strode, late Kesident Magistrate at Dunedin, to fill the appointment. Mr. Strode has been for some time on a visit to England, on leave of absence, but is shortly expected to return to the colony. With reference to the fact which we noticed a few days ago, that some of the Deal boatmen who arrived by the Mystery had obtained private, employment, while the rest were:about to undertake the fishery, we are now. enabled to state that Mr. ;H. J. LeCren has entered into an engagement with six of these men to proceed to Timaru, there to take charge of the boating, of that landing place for the term, to commence with, of one year. Mr. LeCren offers the use of his boats at a moderate rentalj and guarantees a stated amount for the year's.return; he also assists the men and their families to go down to Timaru, and offers to sell .them land for occupation on moderate terms. This offer •has, been readily accepted, and will, we are, sure, be carried out by both sides'to the advantage of all concerned. It is certain that the experience of the Deal boatmen will enable them to work the Timaru boating business more satisfactorily than it has hitherto-been-performed. ■ We understand that the Superintendent will proceed to Auckland by the 'White Swan' to confer with the General Government on the subject of the necessary railway communication within this province. .His Honor will probably be absent about a month. Apropos of railway communication we are informed that Mr. Gabrielli, who has just come out to Sydney on the part of Sir Morton Petb & Co., to undertake railway ; contracts in Australia, is willing to extend his operations to our part of the world, should we be able to offer sufficient inducement. It is not impossible that this gentleman may be induced to visit us in order to judge for "himself.' '
