Markets.

On Thursday last Mr. Thomson's great sale of town and suburban lands came off as advertised, at his Sale rooms, in Christchurch. The attendance was numerous, and the competition for.most lots was considerable, though a few put up were withdrawn without an offer having been made. Of the lots disposed of, we quote the principal items. Twelve qr.-acre sections fronting on Hereford-street and Cashel-street, the property of the Duke of Manchester, sold at a uniform rate of £75 each. One quarter-acre at the corner of Hereford and Antigua streets sold at £105; another at the corner of Cashel and Antigua streets fetched £126. A quarter-acre section in Armagh-street fetched £105; a quarter-acre at .the corner of Colombo and St. Asaph streets, fetched £120; and the lease of half an acre in Lichfield-street, having fifteen years to run, at 50s. annual rent, was bought for £70. Ten acres of rural land on the Avon sold at £30 per acre. A piece of the town reserves, measuring 3 acres, 1 rood and 12 perches, on Madras-street, on which ten per cent of the original purchase money had been paid, and £26l still remained unpaid, was knocked down with its liabilities at £50 per acre. About fifteen acres of the Duke of Manchester's land at Riccarton, in lots of one to two acres, sold at £50 per acre, and one section with long frontage brought £26 per acre. About seven acres of the Hursley property on the Avon, belonging to Mr. S. A. Perceval, sold in lots of one to two acres, realised £630 in all. Some properties in St. Asaph and Cashel streets were withdrawn, also several building sites at the corner of Cashel and Manchester streets, the reserve not being offered; but we learn that Mr. Thomson has since sold a plot with a frontage of seventy feet to Cashel-street and sixty-six feet to Manchester-street for £370. A handsome ai^d substantially built house of seven rooms, with ■ a quarter of an acre of land, situated at the corner of Kilmore-street and the Marketplace, and fronting on the new bridge, brought £600. One of twelve building lots fronting on Manchesterstreet betweenCashel and Hereford streets, with a frontage of thirty feet, and a superficial extent of some seven arid a fifth rods, was offered at the upset price of three guineas a foot frontage^ being at the rate'of above £2000 per acre, but no bidders were found; The prices obtained at this sale indicate that the'value of land in Christchurch is by ho means in process of reduction; and the prices asked indicate a belief in its further advance.

We give below, from the catalogues of the London November wool sales,, the prices obtained for. the cargoes of the Glentanner and Oriental. We mention it here for the sake of quoting an extract from the advices received by a merchant in this town, having reference to the clip of Mr. Chapman of the Mairaki Downs, near Eangiora, whose wool it will be seen fetched the highest price :—" There was a parcel of New Zealand, 64 bales, C X, ex Oriental, sold on the sth November.
