The 'Sydney Morning Herald' of the 18th nit. has the following communication: — The Spec, brig, Miles, Master, brings news from Port de France up to December 28. Hitherto, in spite of the liberal policy of the French Government, this colony has made but little progress, but now it seems that anew era ht»s commenced, and there is every prospect of a rapid colonization. M. Teutavd (the late Governor), has been superseded, but before his departure lie made several grants of large blocks of fertile and wdl watered land, on most advantageous terms. Mr. Joubert, of Sydney, is one of the grantees. In fact all, or nearly all, the available land in the immediate vicinity,of Port do Prauce Is now taken up, and according to the tenor of the grants nmst soon lie populated. M. Teutard also appointed " Watton" (the Aliki of the Wceto district) reigning monarch of afl the aborigrnnl tribes in New Caledonia undor the title, it is to be presumed, of the "King of the Cannibal Islands."
