The Lyttelton Times. Saturday, February 12.
It is perhaps a safe prophecy that some day oi* other we shall have a regular and satisfactory postal service. After our experience, however; no one would venture to say when. We hear of no certainty as to any definitive course to be laid down for the steamers subsidised by the General Government. In the meantime we hear rumours which affect the probable permanence of the Boomerang contract. Private advices have reached us of a difference on the subject amongst the members of the Victorian Government. The promise made by Dr. Evans of a subsidy of £6000 towards the contract entered into by him in concert with the" Superintendent of Wellington appears to be unpalatable to the other members of the Ministry, who are disinclined to place such a vote on the estimates. Should they not do so, Dr. Evans threatens to resign. Under any circumstances a break up of the present Ministry seems more than probable. If the Boomerang contract stands it must be taken into consideration in any permanent arrangement-; if it does not, it becomes the more necessary to know to what course the Royal Mail Company is to be bound.
