Christchurch, Dec. 21,1857. IMMIGRATION REGULATIONS. All persons desirious, pf .ohtajm'ng, assisted passages to the Province of Canterbury in vessels under pontrapt, }:ho.. Provincial, G, oyerrimont, may receivo assistance as follows : 1. The.>Goyernment-srill afford [assistance [equal in amount to the sura paid in cash by t,he passenger. If'there shall be any balance, tho Government will advance the sum, taking from the passenger promissory -;notes for- the .< amount advanced, payable to the Treasurer of the Province. Such note.s iW.ill'be made,payable ,on demand, but,:unless the passenger dispute the debt, or shall attempt to leave the Provihoe/'payment will only be required in sums of five pounds at periods of six months after landing. . • 2. ; Any persons residing in .the. province desirous of assisting thoir friends in England, or elsewhere, to obtain assisted passages ;to^the Colony, may do 'so by drawing a BilLtothe order-of the Provincial Treasurer, accepted a substantial householder, jilso' resident in the province, to be approved of by the Supermtejtd6ntr;as ; [sufficient i security for. the same; this bill may then be transmitted to the person who is desirous of emigrating to the colony, and being by-him -presented to the Emigration Agent will be received injljeuiof cash payment, as hereinafter provided'; the bill will be re-transmit-ted by the Agent to and; must be paid immediately on presentation. 3. The Provincial Goyernmeni are unable atpre; sent to state'at what sum the.rate of passage money ifco the Colony will be fixedy but all bills willbe pre pared on the supposition that it will amount to £20; should it be.less, a proportional part of the bills will be remitted at the time of re-payment. ' 7. .Applications fbr assisted passages will be received at the Secretary's Office, in Christchurch, and at the Resident Magistrate's Office, in Lytbelton. ' WAIMAKARIRI. BRIDGE. NOTICE -TO ■ ENGINEERS, ARCHITECTS, AND BUILDERS. TH E Provincial Government invite Designs for Building a Bridge over jthe River Waimakariri, sev.en miles from phristchurch. -Each Design must be accompanied by a Retailed estimate of the cost.of construction, .which must not exceed twelve thousand pounds. Fifty pounds will be paid for the best, and twenty-five -pounds -for- the second- best,design. The designs to become the property of the Provincial Government. The whole of the designs, will be submitted to Colonel Mould, Consulting Engineer -to the Colony, by whose judgment theProvincial Government will, be, guided, in their award. The Provincial Engineer's designs will be submitted to Colonel Mould with the rest, but will not be-admitted to the competition for the premiums. Designs must be sent in not later than February I,' 1859, "addressed to the Provincial Secretary, Government Ojfices, Christchurch, _and.-endorsed "Des!gn.-for--WaimakarirJL Bridge." v - v The rejected designs will be returned to their owners as soon;^possible.after the Provincial Government haye-made.-their;- award. INSTRUCTIONS TO COMPETITORS. ; The width of -the River is r-1290 feet from bank to bank. The; groiinxj. on;.each :side;pf the River is flat for some distance, and the banks are on a level with the ■■= line of: the-highest freshes.* # - The ordinary-.water line-is eightrfeet, r and the deepest part of the channel twelve feet below the banks. ■; The bottom of the River is a shifting bed of shingle at a depth oflfromjfour to twelve feet below the banks, resting on 'clay at a further depth of four feet arid upwards.. --The,soil-ofithe banks is sand.and light-loom The material of -, the Bridge is deft to the discretion of competitors. Competitors will attend' especially to the following points:— Risk of scouring the.foundations. Danger, from drift timber in, freshes. Difficulty'of securing the banks. Simplicity of construction. Office of Public Works, Sept. 16,1858. TOWN OF AKAROA. THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT ARE prepared to receive tenders for sundry works to be done in the' town of Akaroa. The Provincial Engineer will be in Akaroa during the first week in January for the purpose of pointing out the works to intending contractors, after which specifications may be seen and forms of lender obtained on application to Mr. James Roberts, C.E., Akaroa. Tenders to be sent in to the Resident Magistrate, Akaroa, on or before Saturday, Jan. 15th, at Noon. The Government will not be bound to accept -the lowest or any tender. E.
