Phillips was a stow-away iti the ship Clontarf, having concealed himself for ,the>pjtirpose of obtaining a' passage out.: .The,prisoner,.who stated that he was a cooper by trade and had. worked his passage out Captain Allan to: allow him to work homo again. To this .the master/who gave prisoner a good character,.demurred, on the ground of his not being a seaman.. The prisoner was charged with haying stolen a boat from the barque,lndiana and; deserted from the ship. .'.;.'".'.:'.'•' '..,!..- The' prisoner,. on being questioned by.the court, admitted that the charge was true. ■ Convicted and sentenced f to.three'months' in}prisohment with hard labour. The same individual was ".further charged with haying stolen, two watches and other articles from the Indiana.
Police constable. Elridge deposed to having captured the prisoner at Akaroa, charging him with desertion, which he did not, deny, but gave himself uj> at once. The. constable afterwards told the prisoner he was accused of stealing .watches, &c. This charge he denied, but said in answer, to a question, that he knew who had taken the watches; , : that it was a, man named -Shepherd. ... f:; . ■-',:,■■■ ; ', On the' application .of Sub-Inspector Seager .the case was remanded till 11 ;a.m. on (this day) for the production of furtKei;:evidence^ " ■-■■/■ - ■:.-■ ■ TuESDAY,?JAN.'ii.^:^'-^:'£_2__l2 —-John Yoisin, ajiewly .ari-ived';.immigrant per Clontarf, was convicted of being drunk and disorderly Jii the Immigration barracks on Monday evening.
