WAIMAKARIRE BRIDGE. NOTICE TO ENGINEERS, ARCHITECTS, AND BUILDERS. HjPTTE Provincial Government invito -*- Designs for Building a Bridge over l-ho^ .Rivor Waimakariri, sovon miles from Chrislchurch. Each Design must be accompanied by n detailed estimate of tho cost of construction, which must not exceed twelve thousand pounds. Pi fly pounds will bo-paid for Iho host, and twenty-fivo pounds' for the second host design. Tho designs to become tho properly of the' Provincial Government. The whole of tho designs renoivod will bo submitted to Colonel Mould, Consulting Engineor to the Colony, by whose judgment tho Provincial Government will be guided in their award. Tho Provincial Engineer's designs will bo submitted to Colonel Mould with tho rest, but will not be admitted to tho competition for tho premiums. Designs must ho sent in not Later than February 1, 1859, to tho Provincial Secretary, Government Offices, Christchurch, and endorsed " Design for Waimakariri , Bridge." The rejected designs will be returned to their owners as soon as possible after the Provincial ' Government have made their award. , 1 INSTRUCTIONS TO COMPETITORS. . The width of tho River is 1290 feet from bank to bank. , Tho ground on each side of tho I Biver is flat for some distance, and the banks are on a level with tho line of the highest freshes. . . ■ . The ordinary water line is eight feet, and the deepest part .of the channel twelve feet below the banks. The bottom of the River is a' shifting bed of shingle at a depth of from four to twelve feet below the banks, resting on clay at a further depth of four feet and upwards. The soil of the banks is sand and light loom. The material of the Bridge is left to the discretion of competitors. Competitors will attend especially to the following points :— Eisk of scouring the foundations. Danger from drift timber in freshes. Difficulty of securing the banks. Simplicity of construction. .
