Wednesday, Decemler 29. The English October mail, the news of which, fills our columns to-day, has been delivered in the colonies with" reasonable expedition. The European was only four or five days behind time in brino-ino- it to Melbourne,, and, with slight ,de?ay Dthere, it has come on to our port all the wav by steam, as rapidly as steam can move/ The work has been done before this with even more rapidity ; but we record it now with greater pleasure because it is with something- like an assurance that we shall not have to grumble any more at delays and bung-ling's such as those we have so long- suffered from. The Peninsular and Oriental Company have taken up the contract with the favourable concomitants of experience and a complete staff • if any company can carry out the Australian postal service effectively it is this one, which has a service over" a portion of the route already in operation and working with regularity and success. This is decidedly the best news that the Australasian colonies have received for many a month, .r ■■:■-. —-- — —„™_.. The strengthening of the New Zealand Steam Company (or 'Intercolonial,' as it is now called), of which we hear at the same-time, adds to, the confidence with which "we look forward to a well-oro-ahised postal service at last. When, to° crown all, the Panama route is established, A ew Zealand will be well served indeed^' -
