NEW SOUTH WALES.
By the Lord Ashley we are in receipt of Sydney papers to the 20th ult. Sir Alfred Stephen resigned his seat in the Legislative Council on the 19th November. In the Legislative Assembly on the 16th, Mr. Martin explained the circumstances connected with his resignation of tho office of Attorney General, The main reason which lie assigned as the cause of his separation from the Government was not that thero was any political difference between himself and hi* colleagues, or that he had advised his Excellency to refuse his assent to tho Assessment. Bill. He had admitted, however, that ho did nob believe, under the 58th clause of the Constitution Act, any assessment on runs was | legal; and he further admitted that in some of the principles of the Electoral Bill and other measures introduced by the Gavernmeiit, lj" did not concur. Tho immediate cause of his resignation, however, was--an intimation from the Colonial Secretary, on tho part of Jiimsol and colleagues, that 'it was desirable ho should resign. The Hon. Alfred J. P. Lutwyche, tc *>oU*
