At the meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday, of which we must-for" lack ofspace defer our full report, some important work was done. ,On Tuesday, money (£250) was voted for Kaiapoi Police Barracks and Court House; for the Fendall Town and Riccarton road (£100); for a "Queen's Plate" (£100) to he run for at the Canterbury races; and for Charles street, Kaiapoi, (£200). Tho. Public Hospital Bill was read a third time and tho Appropriation Bill a first time. On Wednesday £50 was voted as compensation ,tp Constable Ealcs for injuries received in service. Tho Appropriation, Christ College Amendment'(to permit change of .seal) and Seab'PreA'ention Bills,' were passed through all their stages by (suspension of standing order*. Resolutions on steam communication wero ageeed to, also ono recommending a beacon for
the headsof Lyttelton harbor; and flnally^the following important scries on church building, proposed by Mr. Packer, seconded by Mr. Bishop, and carried on a division by 15 votes to 2: " That whereas under existing circumstances it is expedient to assist certain christian denominations in the building or enlargement of places of public worship, within the province of Canterbury ; be it resolved, "; "1. "That this Council will sanction the payment of the sum of £10,000 for the above-named purpose out of the general revenues of the province. 2. "That the said sum of £10,000 shall he paid to the several persons, and in the several proportions undermentioned respectively, viz.:— To the Bishop of Christchurch ... £7,800 „ : Acting head of the Wesleyan body 800 „ Acting head of the Presbyterians .......... ......... 1000 „ Roman catholics 400 3. "That the said sum of £10,000 shall be expended within two years, that is to say, £5000 within the present financial year, and £5000 within the next ensuing ; and that subject to this provision, the amounts shall be drawn as required by the heads of the denomination aforesaid. 4. " That detailed accounts shall be furnished by the head of each religious denomination of the expenditure of the grant received by it when called upon to do so by the Provincial Government, and that such accounts shall be laid on the table of the Provincial Council when in session." The rest of the business was unimportant. The Council was prorogued last evening.
