COCHIN CHINA.

Tie deeply deplore the news we have privately received from a trustworthy and venerable correspondent, to the effect that the Pagan persecution of Christians in the north of Cochin China rages still, although with abated horrors. The Christians have been everywhere hiding and flying for their lives, their rude little churches, chapels, and. oratories, sacrilegiously violated and destined, their homes ravaged, their persons, when discovered, subjected to death by the most ingenious tortures; even their little baptised children, because baptised, mangled with scomgings. .The Christians are of new or recent conversion, and are "the seed" of much "blood of martyrs." Several French priests have, within the last few years, thus fallen ; but in a more easy and. less inhuman manner. The. French Government could, by the laws of nations, interfere. It seized Algeria for a far-smaller reason. It is now hoped that the peace with China will bring peace to these young Christian communities, numbering already a million' ot most fervent converts, willing to die; as they havei shown, for him who died for them.— Colombo Observer.
