The width of the ;River is 1290 feet from bank to bank. The ground on each side of the" River is flat for some distance, and- theibanks! are on; a level 7 with • the; Hue of the highest; freshes; ; The ordinary water line is eight feet, and the deepest- part of the -channel twelve feet below the banks. The bottom of the River is a shifting bed of shingle at a depth of from four to twelve feet below the banks, resting on- clay at a further depth of four feet and upwards. The soil of the banks is sand and light loom. The material of the Bridge is left to the discretion of competitors. Competitors will attend especially to the following points :— Risk of scouring' the foundations. Danger'from drift timber in freshes: Difficulty of securing the banks. Simplicity of.construction.
