Correspondence.

To the Editor of the Lyttelton Times.

Sib, —I hope yon will be able in your next publication to give us the names of those members of the Council who voted last night against the Local Boards and Immigration Barracks Bills, that the electors may have a chance of reminding those gentlemen of their duties, not as delegates, but representatives of the people; at the same time to urge the attendance of members in Council when important measures are brought forward. I remain, Yours respectfully, AN ELECTOR, i Lyttelton, Oct. 22,1858. j

To the Editor of the Lyttelton Times.

g IBj —I n answer to ' Pair Play,' I may say that the sum of £300,000 was mentioned by me rather as an intimation that it was possible for the tunnel to cost an amount of money which it would not be wise in us to spend, than as the result of a detailed estimate. The sum mentioned may have been the roughest calculation, or the nicest possible estimate of the Provincial Engineer, for aught I know: lam only skilled enough myself to know that f u *? tlmates are to be received with a strong doubt of their accuracy. I might have guessed, however, that some preliminary investigation like' boring was necessary for a tunnel, had not the same engineer found the Gollan's Bay hill practicable without any such precautions. I am, Sir, yours obediently, CKOSBIE WARD.
