Lyttelton, Oct. 14, 1858. WAIMAKARIRI BRIDGE. NOTICE TO ENGINEERS, ARCHITECTS, AND BUILDERS. rp H E Provincial Government invite _*_„ DesigDSrJbrlßuildinga Bridge over ' the River. Waimakariri, seven miles from Christchurch. Each Design 'must be accompanied by a , detailed estimate of, the .cost of construction, which must not exceed twelve thousand-pounds. Fifty, pounds will, be paid, for the best, and twemty-iive pounds for the' second best design. The designs to h'ecom'e the property of the Provincial Government. The whole, of'the designs received will be submitted toColonel Mould, Consulting Sngi-, neer to the, Colony,. by whose judgment the Provincial Government will be guided in their award. The Provincial Engineer's designs will be submitted to Colonel Mould with the rest, but will not be admitted to the competition for the premiums. Designs must be sent in not later than January 1, 1859, addressed to the Provincial Secretary, Government Offices, Christchurch^ and endorsed " Design for Waimakarivi Bridge." The rejected .designs will be returned to their owners.as soon as possible after the Provincial, Government have made their award. INSTRUCTIONS TO COMPETITORS. The,width of the River is 1290 feet, from, bank to bank. The ground on each side of the River is flat for some distance, and the banks are on - a level' with • the line of the highest freshes. The ordinary .water, line is eight feet, and the deepest part of the channel twelve feet below the banks. The bottom of the River is a shifting bed of, shingle at a depth of from four to twelve feet below the banks, resting on clay at a further depth of four feet and- upwards. The soil of the .banks is sand and .light loom. The material of, the-.Bridge is left to the I discretion of competitors. Competitors will attend especially to the fol-; lowing points : — Risk of .scouring the foundations. Danger from drift timber, in freshes. Difficulty of securing tho'banks.
