FRANCE.
Several districts in France are suffering severely from a great want of water. In some of the central districts. the inhabitants have given up their daily ablutions. The scarcity extends to the neighbourhood of Paris. At Versailles, the Mayor has published a proclamation, urging the inhabitants not to waste the precious fluid. In Paris it is used very sparingly by the lower classes. In the north the cattle are suffering greatly, and water has to be fetched from such distances for their use, that its value has much increased—a pail of water being sold at the same price as a pail of milk.
The ' Patrie' says that a Russian frigate, the Palkan, has joined the French squadron in the Adriatic, and been placed under the orders of the French admiral. This news has created great sensation in Vienna. The result of the vaccination of the French army is that, on the average, the operation was successful in l-12th of the whole number; partially successful in 1-15 th, and unsuccessful in all the rest.
A curious story is current in Paris, which hints that Fuad Pasha's illness is occasioned by learning that his only daughter has been forced to enter the harem of the Sultan. Fuad, who is more of a European than a Turk, has given her an excellent education, with a view to a better fate.
The price of bread in Paris, for the first fornight of the month, is fixed at 35 centimes the 21b loaf, being an advance of 3 centimes on the previous fortnight.
The ' Correspondence' newspaper declares the report that the yellow fever had appeared at Lisbon, was without foundation. The' Memorian,' of Amiens, states that no summonses have been issued, calling ..upon the duellists Courtiel and Hyene to appear before the military division at LUle, in the affair with M. de Pene.
