Peacock and Co.; 400 bushels wheat, 244 do. barley, Goald and Miles. j The • Melbourne Argus,' of the 24th September, says,— Daring the early part of tne day great excitement prevailed to learn the name of the steamer signalled off Portland. The announcement that it was the Lord Ashley, from Milford Haven. Tjound for New Zealand, was m»de a little before eleven o'clock, and caused general disappointment. The following is a copy of the telegram received from ihe station master at Porilaud :—" The steamer Lord Ashley, 300 tons. Captain Stewart, from Milford Haven to Anckl.tnd, nnder soil, pat into Belfast at 9 a.m., for water, coals, and provisions. This is the steamer retried off Portland. She is the first of the mail steamers to ply between Sydney aud New Zealand."

The steamer White Bwan, Captain McLean, arrived this morning, at three o'clock, from Manakan via Taranaki and Nelson, having lefi Manakau on the 3rd Oct. She was detained nine days at the heads, not beiog able to cross the bar. She brings dates from Auckland the l*t, Taranaki tiie sth, and Nelson the 9th inst. The last voyage of the White Swan from Manakan to Otago and back was accomplished in 23 days, including the usual stoppages at all intermediate ports.— IftUington Independent, O'C. 9. The Adolphus Yates, schooner, 130 tons, Bell, arrived in Wellington on the 7tb inst., from Sydney. She will come on to this port without delay.

The fc'lioooer Mary Thomson retnrned to Wellington fro.TJ Melbourne on the 7th instant, after a rapid ran of ten days from Port Philip Heads. She brought Melbourne papers to the 24th ultimo, of which some copies have been kindly forwarded to us by the Canterbury. From these we make full extracts in another place.
