OTAGO.

By the Rosebud we have through the mail only one paper, and that of a remote date—the 'Colonist'of the 17th Sept. But from private private sources we have some later information.

The Jura arrived from the Clyde on, the 23rd September with 275 passengers, the last shipload (except the long waited for LorcPWorsley) to come at Government expense under the scheme which has been in operation a short time but with prolific results. Mr. Adam, the Immigration Agent, has returned in the Jura, his engagement having terminated.

The' Witness' noticing the arrival of this large body of people looking for employment, draws their attention to the fact that the current rate of wages paid on Government works is sa. per day, but that a higher price is paid by private employers. It is added that no further reduc-* tion is contemplated; but that the Government intend to commence the main line of road from Dunedin to Invercargill, at the further as well as the nearer end, locating also a number of labourers upon various parts of the line. It is proposed also to aid in the distribution of labor by conveying persons who have made permanent engagements with private parties to their destination in the same vessels which take the road parties, free of cost.

The Indian Relief Fund subscription list has been closed, and the balance £356 17s. 5d., remittal to England.

The Lord Worsley arrived on the 2nd inst., full of passengers.
